It was Friday night, the second week of February. The rain was pounding against the roof, the lightening flashing against the walls. I was working on the greatest piece of fiction ever to pour out of my hand onto paper. Then it happened. In burst my woman louder then the thunder outside.
"We've got to talk!" she said.
And with that she dumped a bag of candy hearts right on top of my masterpiece.
"Um, honey, do you think we could talk about this later? I just got a surge of inspira..."
"NO!" she interrupted. "We're going to talk now!"
So we started to talk, but only in the most peculiar way. I sat there for a moment while she fumbled through the hearts.
"What on earth are you doing?" I said. "I thought you wanted to talk." She said nothing. Then she placed a heart in front of me, right on top of the last word I had written, free.
"Marry me" it read. I was taken aback. We'd been dating for about a year now. I have to admit, the sex was great, but she was, well, a bit of a nuisance. Always barging in like this, always cutting my stories short. Just always in the way. I just sat there for a minute, I'm sure my mouth was gaping open. She quickly placed another heart on top of the first one.
"I'll wait" it read.
I didn't know what to say. I liked her and everything, but marriage? I just wasn't ready. Carefully I searched through the hearts, there had to be something I could use. I picked up a heart and gently placed it in front of her.
"In your dreams" it said. I smiled at her, trying to make her laugh, trying to change the topic. She quickly replied with another heart.
"Forever" it read. She took my pen and drew in an exclamation point. I was in trouble this time. It was my turn in this silly game. The room was quiet though the rain still showered down on the house around us.
"Sweet talk" was the heart I put down. Then I started...
"I mean, we will get married someday, but honey, right now..." She put a finger to my lips. Then she placed another heart in front of me.
"I love you" I fumbled through the hearts. What on earth was I supposed to do now? My world began to collapse, I couldn't breathe. I was not about to get married. Beads of sweat began forming on my forehead.
"Hello friend" was all I could find. God I hoped she wouldn't take it the wrong way. She took the heart, drew in a question mark and put it back in front of me.
"Hello friend?"
I nodded. She turned a little red at this point. Hearts went flying in all directions as she searched through the pile. She threw one at me, hitting me in the chin.
"Whatever" With that she stormed out the door. I was as lost as ever. Women! What was I supposed to do, say oh yes honey, I'll marry you tomorrow? Then spend the rest of my life in agony with HER? I cleaned up all the hearts, placing a blue "Be mine" in my mouth. I scratched the plush poodle she'd given me for Christmas on the head. It was for inspiration. Brushing aside the candy powder that was still on my paper, I picked up my pen and began a new story. I wondered if I'd get to finish this one without interruptions. Doubt it.
