China '98 - Page 2

Don't forget to check out Dave's site at http://travel.to/china98, and Rob's site at http://www.crosswinds.net/london/~rob! Since Kayee lives in China and has to retrieve all his e-mail via an international phone call to the UK, I think it's too much effort for him to put one together. Never mind.

Child seen at a food stall

Kayee and I spent one evening in Beijing walking around the streets near our hotel, where there was a stretch of food stalls that sprung up seemingly from nowhere, just as dusk began to fall. I took this photo of a child reaching up for his dinner.

Further down the line of food stalls was this pile of coconuts. The men working there seemed happy enough to pose for a picture.

One particular food stall engulfed its part of the street in steam. I wanted to get an image of the line of stalls stretching into the distance, and the steam added extra atmosphere. The halo of light was unintentional, but doesn't detract from the main subject.

Looking across the street from the food stalls, I was drawn to the neon, the trees garlanded in light and the red lanterns in front of this restaurant. Lanterns like these were a common sight in front of shops wherever we went in China.

Detail of a 'fire-bucket' in the Imperial Palace

Towards the end of our stay in Beijing, we visited the 'Forbidden City' - so-called since only the Emperor's family and officials were allowed to enter. It is properly known as the Imperial Palace, and consists of many ornate buildings and courtyards. We saw many large metal urns that we termed 'fire-buckets' - this image shows a detail of one of their handles.
