| WHAT IT WAS LIKE DATING IN THE 1950'S That Was A Long Time Ago! Saturday Nights Were A Time To Get Dressed Up And Go Out Cruising, To The Movies, To Parties At Friends's Houses, Play Records (45's And 78's!!), Pop Some Corn, Drink Coke And Dance On the Living Room Floor After Rolling Back The Rug! Girls "Went Steady" With Their Boyfriends And Wore Their Boyfriend's Class Ring On A Neck Chain, Or Wrapped Yarn Around The Ring's Shank Until It Got Small Enough To Fit Their Finger. They Ususally Used Angora Yarn! |

Families Were Close, Went To Church On Sunday, And Everyone Ate Supper Together Every Evening And Had Big Sunday Noon Meals! Most Mothers Didn't Work Outside The Home. Instead, They Ran The House, Cooked, Cleaned, Washed, Ironed, Vacuumed, Hung Clothes Out On The Line Because Dryers Weren't On The Market Yet For The Average Family To Afford. Television Was In Its Infancy And Consisted Of A Huge Box With A Tiny Oval Screen. There Were No Cable Services Or Roof Antennas, So The "Bunny Ears" Sat Atop The TV And Had To Be Continuously Readjusted Depending On Which One Of The Very Few Stations One Wanted To Watch. TV Parties Were The Rage! Those Who Didn't Have A TV Would Migrate In The Evenings To Friend's Homes Who Had One--And Expected The Host To Provide Refreshments, Just Like They Were Attending The Movies!! Some Of The Programs In Those Early Days Were "American Bandstand" In The Afternoon, "The Kate Smith Show", Endless Boxing Matches In The Late Evening, "Kukla, Fran And Ollie", John Cameron Swayze's 15 Minute News Program That Came On At 7:30 P.M, A Roberta Quinlin Lady Who Played The Piano And Sang--And Other "Hokey" Programs That At The Time We Thought Were GREAT! TV Was On The Air Only Intermittently With Long Spaces Of "Dead Air" Between Programs And They Signed Off Usually At 11 P.M. The First Late Night Show Came On At 11 P.M. In The Early 50's And Was Called "Broadway Open House", Starring Morey Amsterdam, A Comedian Who Played The Cello And Told Jokes. Dagmar, A Buxom Blond From West Virginia Was His Side Kick. |

| Other Things Going On In The 1950's Were: ~The Elvis Craze!~ ~Drive-In Movies, Complete With Misquitos!~ ~TV's Milton Berle Show, "Texaco Star Theater"~ ~Radio Soap Operas--TV Soap Operas Were Not Yet A Daily Fare~ ~Poodle Skirts~ ~The "Gibson Girl" Look With Circular Skirts And Large Bows Around Blouse Collars~ ~Dancing After School In Soda Shops~ ~The Korean War~ ~See-Through Blouses~ ~Saddle Oxfords And White Buck Shoes~ |

| The 1950's Were Also A Time Of The Cold War Fears, The "Iron Curtain" And Worrying About A Nuclear Attack By The Russians. People Built Bomb Shelters In Their Basements Or Back Yards. We Sometimes Worried If The World Would Still Be Around When We Were Old Enough To Marry And Have Families. |

| Times Back Then Were More Simple. ~Nobody Had Heard Of AIDS~ ~Drug Use By Teens Was About Nonexistant~ ~Only The So Called "Bad Girls" Had Babies Before Marriage~ ~Guys Actually Opened Car Doors For Girls~ ~Ballroom Dancing Was Still "In"~ ~Proms Were Still Held In High School Gyms With Months Of Work And Preparation Making Decorations For Special Themes~ ~Club Member's Harvest Moon Hayrides Were Popular And Usually Turned Out To Be Necking Parties~ ~Schools Were A Safe Place To Be And Teacher's Disapline Ruled~ |
