By Mark Waid and Howard Porter and Drew Geraci
The Cover: This cover earns my coveted cover of the week. Howard Porter puts together a really cool piece with Ra’s Al Ghul walking through a field with the costumes of the JLA hanging shredded on trees. Really cool, Howard Porter draws some mighty fine covers.
The Story: Man this is so good its hard to describe. Basically all you need to know is that the JLA are being taken out by Ghul. When I say taken out I mean HARD! Plastic Man: frozen and shattered. Aquaman: afraid of water. Martian Manhunter: skin turned into an explosive element. Superman: reading gone (along with the rest of the worlds) and I’m not even gonna say what happens to Batman and Green Lantern. This story has it all, plus some wicked dialogue.
The Writing: Don’t cry because Grant Morrison is gone 'cause Mark Waid has crafted a story equal or maybe better to Morrisons’ great ones. It starts off with a bang, has a rock solid middle and ends on a great cliffhanger.
The Art: I love Howard Porters’ art. His whole run on JLA has been great. I only hope that he does go on to Adventures of Superman and not retire to web designing.
Overall: Why should you buy it? No the real question is why shouldn’t you buy it? It’s great! I can’t stress how good this book is.
Rating: 10 out of 10 without a doubt
Similar Tastes: Other well written team-books: The Avengers, The Fantastic Four (when you can see the art from lack of word bubbles) and The Thunderbolts.
From DC Comics
The Buzz: Super popular writer Mark Waid’s first story arc wraps up with some shocking revelations.
The Story: The team gets out of all their traps and goes after Ra’s Al Ghul’s men who have biological weapons. Using their powers they stop the bad
guys and go after Ra’s himself. Ra’s gets away and the team reconvenes
at their Watchtower to decide what to do about Batman (re: last issue). The
team votes on whether or not to expel Bats, but ultimately he knows how they’re going to vote.
The Good: Well this arc certainly took a big dump since the first issue. The villain just gets away? Come on, this is bullcrap! It seems like the whole point of this arc was just to show that Batman can’t be trusted. It was just too long-winded and too contrived. The part about Batman knowing what’s going to happen was neat, but otherwise it's not so hot. The art is good but not great. It’s sort of a weird but it’s not that bad.
The Bad: Almost everything, it was just too long and boring and seemed pointless. I’m not going to even waste my time on explaining how bad it is.
Rating: Not good, not good at all. I’m giving this a 5 out of 10, and to think that the first part of this arc I gave a 9. Pathetic.
