Promiscuities: The Secret Struggle For Womanhood, Naomi Wolf
review by Janis

Sure, I dig the theory behind this book, but Ms. Wolf seems a little dated here.  She tells a bunch of stories about her and her girlfriends as they discuss/discover/engage in sexual activity for the first time.  This is a good idea, if the book is for old ladies.  I, however, grew up with MTV, Madonna, R-rated movies, and boys who tried to feel more than my boobies by the sixth grade.  Here's an example of what I mean.  "Adolescence is, for girls, a time of fanaticism.  Those few girls in my school who could afford it became obsessed with horses...Shoplifting was the ultimate daredevil behavior for girls of all backgrounds."
Um, that's kinda sweet, but if shoplifting was the ULTIMATE in daredevil for me and my friends, we would have gotten in a lot less trouble than we actually did, believe me.
It's not that her book is WRONG, it's just that it's hard for me to relate to, kind of like that old projector film about your period they used to make us watch,  "Julie's Story"-this Julie chick was so traumatized by going on the rag that she freaked out, crying and holding her face in her hands, etc.  Frankly, I knew what it was about long before Julie did, and I had a pretty good grasp on the use of tampons, too-Julie can wear a diaper if she wants, but I'll ride the cotton horse if it's all the same, thanks.

So-check the book out if you want to know what it was like for your mother to become a woman.  Or, just ask your mom what it was like for her to become a woman.  That way you'll save a few dollars.
LITERARY LINKS
Womynlynks-the most comprehensive and eye-pleasing site for women in literature.  Great for homework help.

Infinitely Emily-this girl is very interesting.  We think she's a great writer in the making.

The Book Bitch-she's a bitch, she likes books.  What more do you need to know?

A Communist's Death Graced by the Presence of a Knight in Love While Vipers Sleep-Okay, so he's not technically female, but this guy's pretty cool.  He seems to have a thing for communism, but we like him.

Audrey McCrone-this girl will be famous someday.  We swear it.

Tamed Hypocrisy-very witty girl dealing with growing up.  Extremely entertaining, but she uses dirty words.  If you don't like that, don't go.  If you don't mind, (and we don't) enter with pleasure.  PS-We couldn't get the link to work, so we've linked this to her e-mail.  Ask her to send you a link.

Junk and Conversation- cool site from Kathleen...you should submit to her, Janis did!  Check out our favorite angry babe in Junk's miscellaneous section....also Alice wrote a poem about Billie Holliday...she is SUCH a musical snob.

African American Women Writers in the 19th Century-comprehensive site provided by the NY Public Library.

We are constantly adding new links...send us any you would like to see here!
