Chapter Two
Fiona continued.  "You're too weak.  You're always going to wonder if someday I might come back, and I'm counting on this behavior.  It's going to be my rise to glory and your fall to defeat."  Fiona held her mouth close, so close, to David's ear as she whispered her poisonous words.  She watched with approval as a single tear fell unchecked down her husband's rugged cheek.  "So here's what you're going to do," she remarked sharply, gripping his member painfully in her hand.  "You will open an account tomorrow, in my name.  In this account you will place the tidy sum of three million dollars, to start with.  This account is to have a one million dollar balance at all times  I won't bother to threaten you, it's totally unnecessary.  Your love for me, bitter as it is, will assure your total, unbreakable compliance.  David's eyes, only moments ago filled with anger, reflected only her disgust at his love.

"Lastly, I'm going to punish you for making me ordinary.  I've decided that you'll be the one to tell the children I'm gone.  You can explain to them that I'm not coming back, not ever.  I'm not going to say goodbye to them, and I know how much it will tear you up to see them hurt by me in such a careless way.  Ciao!"

Fiona removed herself from David's lap and with a jaunty little wave exited the room.  She called for butler to have the car brought around and her luggage loaded.  David watched her go, and when the door close behind her he expelled a ragged, dejected breath.

Neither David nor Fiona had noticed the small set of eyes shining wetly from the dark interior of David's closet.  These small eyes, dampened with tears, had seen and heard everything, and knew for certain that life was going to change from that instant on.
