Seoul, Korea - April 18, 2003
Well, a little story here today. I met a German guy hanging around the general vicinity of my own neighborhood. Not knowing the area very well, I asked him what there is to do around here and everything else.
Anyhow, it turns out that the guy is from Germany, and not only just Germany, but originally from East Germany. We had a beer in a nearby bar, and later I met two of his friends. Both of which were also from East Germany.
The cool thing about these guys is that they are living in South Korea with a dream. Actually, at the point of writing this, I've went out to meet them a few times over the last week as we are basically neighbors. There dream is a very admireable one, and it is to travel the world.
Somehow or another they heard of all the money they could make in South Korea, and decided to give it a try, and on the savings they would travel all of Asia, and ultimately, one in particular has a dream to ultimately live in the United States, where he is convinced he will find his true home in the world.
Anyhow, there plan was to come to Korea to make money. One of their friends was saying they could make up to $7,000 a month teaching English in Korea.. which was obviously a very big lie.. as you can't even come close to that. But, anyhow, they are giving it a go, and just recently arrived. So far they are teaching phone English and pretending to be from the United States, even though its quite obvious that they aren't.
Anyhow, I guess to the main point.. if anyone is reading this and knows any demand or possibility for a couple of German teachers, they would be extremely appreciative. I quite admire their travel desire and their wanderlust spirits. Everytime I see them they express their desire to be in this country and that country and every country. Their enthusiasm is quite addictive!! It reminds me of myself with much of my own enthusiasm. However at this point, years of constant money problems and now going back to many of the same places I've already been over and over I can see that at some point I have to make some changes regarding these habits.
Anyhow, its quite interesting at this point they are not making much money at all, and sharing a small apartment of some type, while doing telephone teaching. I don't know if their dreams are going to come through, let alone even make it here in Korea. I'm hoping someone can give them leads. Up to this point, they are basically doing telephone teaching for 2 hours a day.. and their English isn't all that great in itself, so I think they are kind of at the point of giving up. If anyone can help them out, or knows anyone who is willing to pay some money to study German, I would be glad to pass the message on to them promptly.
