Rena del pieve gobbi made ruthless use of personal memories in order to create insurrection. Taking eight hours out of her life and spending 11 months distilling them into four minutes of abstract images, which delve into the psychological response to terror. Insurrection explores the aspect of synesthesia in abstract film using devices such as the effect of flicker films on the autonomous nervous system and the psychological responses to colour insurrection evokes specific emotional states in the viewer. Insurrection continues the exploration into closed eye vision embanked upon by Stan Brakhage. Rena del pieve gobbi combines in her cinematic process the ideology of abstract filmmaking with explorations by Carl Jung into the effects of mandala images on schizophrenics. The result of the use of this abstract narrative structure in insurrection is the evolution of filmic experience causing the dislocation of the position of the viewer as voyeur. By directly evoking emotion in the viewer the film becomes an intimate journey. Insurrection will arouse memories relating to the emotions evoked causing the viewer to translate the narrative into personal memory. |
