alembic, 1999-2001
ceramic, mixed media
This piece and the next two
are part of a larger
series in progress.
The working title is "fallacy of
resemblance", a concept
that is also explored in
Umberto Eco's "Foucoult's
Pendulum". This is
how humans relate things
on the basis on their
resemblance to each other,
and somehow find a
deeper significance in this
"relationship". Many
secret societies and mystical
systems have this
kind of basis. The
sculptures in this series are all
variations on a similar
shape or derived from basic
shapes. They relate
to the pendulums.
The ceramic pieces are saggar-fired
with sawdust
and oxides. This particular
piece has been
dropped twice, and is now
mostly epoxy on the
inside.
