hive, 1999-2001
mixed media
The beehive is made of rope
which was
wrapped over a wire framework,
and then melted
beeswax was brushed over
the whole thing. I
used a few coats for get
the effect I wanted.
There are thin wires held
up by pins in the surface
of the book. The tiny
ovals are the work "star" cut
out of an old book of poetry.
I meant them to
look like bees doing their
dance, communicating
direction to the hive.
The beehive is a familiar
symbol in Mormonism, but
is also used in Free-
masonry.
