this is the original sketch for a piece I've been working on since 1997. I found a poetry book
(think its called British Modern Poetry, ed. L. Untermeyer) where the word "star" occurred
on so many pages that I couldn't pick one place to work on, as I usually do in books. So
I began circling all the words "star" on each page with a ball-point pen. That took awhile, but
I learned much more than previously on modern british poetry, so no hard feelings. Next, I
covered each page with a dark blue wash, leaving the small ovals containing "star" uncolored.
This took me nearly 2 years. Its a long book.
The grid shown above evolved into a tool that I finally made, and I guess I'm planning on
mapping the co-ordinates of the "stars" on the pages...or at least suggesting that it could
be done...
The new wrinkle is that I found another copy of "British Modern Poetry", and now I want a
mirror book with the word "star" cut out from each page...I haven't started to tackle this yet.
