ceramic, mixed media
This piece was sort of an
extra for awhile. I
wasn't sure how it fit in
the series I was working
on. I put it outside
on a bench outside my studio,
after it was fired once,
to get it out of my way.
Somehow, it blew over and
was sundered to
pieces in the fall to the
ground. My studio mate
rescued the pieces and put
them in my studio space.
I had been doing sketches
of a blue patchwork
pendulum, so this seemed
like a handy (if work-
intensive) opportunity.
I stained the pieces with
red iron oxide and fired
them again. Then I covered
the iron with cobalt oxide
and fired them
another time. (Both
times at low-temperatures
to minimize the shrinkage
and warping).
I put it all back together
in a week. It is held to-
gether with many types of
epoxy, concrete filler
and grout. I used
canvas as a sort of "band-aid"
behind some of the really
bad cracks inside the
piece. You can still
see some of the canvas
peeking through from behind.
