The Adventures of Sara & Bill

The first rays of sunlight lit up the fields, as an old oak tree cast an eerie shadow on the monstrous dwelling in the centre of it.

"Over here! I think I found a way in." Sara whispered excitedly.

"Where? Oh, I see it . . . think we'll fit?" Bill asked cautiously.

"You're such a pessimist, of course we'll fit!" Sara exclaimed as she proceeded to squeeze through the small hole. "It's dark in here, so watch your step." She noted to Bill, who had followed her in.

"What is this place? I've never seen anything like this before." Bill questioned.

"It's one of the Giant's houses."

"I just hope it's empty! I've never seen one of them, and never want to!" Bill aped nervously.

"Awww, don't tell me you're afraid!" Sara teased.

"Me? Afraid? Never!" Bill grunted.

"Ha! Sure." She said under her breath.

They continued to explore the seemingly empty dwelling. They started in the basement, and worked their way up to what appeared to be the kitchen.

"This place sure is big!" Bill panted. "Did you hear that?"

"Hear what? You're probably just hearing things again." Sara dismissed.

A creaking sound came from a different room, and the lights flicked on. Sara and Bill froze, as their blood ran cold.

"I told you I heard a sound!" Bill hissed.

"Shut up and follow me." Sara commanded.

The footsteps grew louder. Each step felt like an earthquake, as the Creature drew nearer. Bill bolted for the backdoor.

"No, we'll never make it! Head for the cupboard." Sara whispered.

The kitchen lights flicked on. Bill and Sara hid as best they could in the over-sized cupboard.

"Think we'll be safe in here?" Bill asked.

"For now, at least." Sara whispered.

They stood frozen. Waiting. Listening. A rustling sound emitted from outside the cupboard, along with the sound of opening and closing various cupboard doors.

"Oh God! What if it opens this one?" Bill gasped. "We'll never get out of here alive! You said this place was empty!"

"Listen Bill, get a hold of yourself, we'll be fine. We are professionals for Christ sake, I've done this a million times, no problem!"

A near by cupboard opened.

"It's coming closer . . . it must know we're here . . . it's a setup!" Bill whimpered.

"It is NOT a setup. Stop talking, it might hear you."

They waited nervously. All of a sudden a ray of light pierced the veil of protective darkness. The cupboard was opening.

"We're all going to die!" Sobbed Bill.

They cupboard door opened further, and an incredibly huge hand reached in. Sara and Bill cringed in fear.

"Look out!" Shouted Sara as the hand dropped a huge box just millimeters away from Bill.

"What was THAT?!" Bill questioned frantically.

"It's one of their boxes, probably has food in it. The Giants are a strange lot. Hey, think we could carry one back with us to show the others?"

"What, are you crazy? They're way too big, lets just get out of here."

"Alright, but lets wait until It leaves, it'll be safer."

They waited quietly for It to leave. A few minutes later, the cupboard opened, and another box came crashing down before either of them could react. It landed on one of Bill's legs. He howled in pain. The cupboard closed once more. Sara quickly rushed over and tried to pull Bill out.

"You're stuck, I can't get you out, what do you want me to do?" Asked Sara.

"Do what you have to, just get me out of here!" Gasped Bill between clinched teeth.

Bill braced himself while Sara pulled even harder. Eventually he was freed, minus a leg. Sara helped him up.

"Sorry 'bout that, you alright?" She asked sympathetically.

"Ya, I'll be fine," he grunted, "lets just get out of here."

Sara and Bill listened carefully. No sound, It was finally gone. They quickly crawled out of the cupboard and headed for the backdoor. Sara helped the limping Bill.

"We're almost there pal, just a little more and we'll be safe." Comforted Sara.

Again the lights flicked on. Bill groaned.

"I'm not going to leave you here, Bill."

"But you have to, it will be a senseless waste. Think of your family!" Bill gasped.

"We'll both make it out of here alive. Now just shut up, and run!" Sara growled.

They started towards the door again. The footsteps grew louder behind them.

"It's seen us! We're done for." Bill whimpered.

"We've only got a couple more steps to go. Come on Bill, don't give up now!" Sara pleaded.

"I can't go on another step."

"Here, I'll carry you, climb on my back."

"I'll only slow you down."

"It's either we both die here, or you climb on my back, and we live to tell about it."

Bill reluctantly climbed on her back, and she carried him the remaining steps to the backdoor.

A large shadow loomed over them, accompanied by a loud crashing sound as it stomped down just millimeters away. As the Giant's foot stomped down a second time, Sara dived for the opening. They had slipped out of it's grasp, finding safety in the great outdoors. At long last they were safe.

"Come on, Billy boy, we're going home." Sara grinned tiredly.

They both slowly returned to their home, to receive a hero's welcome. When they got back they told everyone of their frightful adventure with one of the Giants. The children listened in awe, while the Elders decided what actions should be taken next.

Epilogue:

That night, in the "Giant's house", Mr. and Mrs. Smith sat down for dinner.

"John dear, you'll never believe this, but I think our house is infected with ants!" Mrs. Smith stated flatly.

"Ants? Why do you say that?" Mr. Smith questioned.

"This morning, after I got back from the supermarket, I saw two ants by the backdoor."

"Did you get them?"

"No, they got away. I think we should call the exterminator tomorrow."

"Alright dear, if it'll make you feel better."

"Yes, it would. I HATE ants!" Mrs. Smith hissed.
