The Gwendolyn Post Incident
By Kristjan Brezovnik

"Sleep well?" Buffy asked, smiling, when she came downstairs in the morning.

Faith glared at her.

"It was pure torture and you know it," she said. "And you're so gonna pay for it." She grinned. "You're gonna learn a new definition of sexual torture."

Buffy chuckled.

"Well, I didn't get much sleep last night either."

"At least you didn't have to sleep on a broken mattress."

Buffy frowned.

"I thought you slept on the sofa."

"As if. I tried, I failed. So I went upstairs."

"Oh. Where's Mom?"

"Outside. Breakfast is ready."

"Join me?"

Faith thought for a moment and then got up.

"I have a feeling I'm gonna do some serious slaying tonight," she said.

Neither Buffy nor Faith was too happy when Gwendolyn Post showed up during slaying. And the way she was bitching over Giles, well, it made her even less popular. But even though Faith was less than happy to have a bitch like Post for a Watcher, she hoped she could train her. She grinned at the idea of training a Watcher.

"I'll see you later," she said to Buffy when Post wanted her to go with her.

"Okay," Buffy said and they kissed.

"Morning," Buffy said when she got down in the morning.

"Morning, honey," Joyce said.

"Hey," Faith said.

"So, how was the new mattress?" Buffy asked.

Faith smiled.

"Like heaven."

Buffy smiled back.

"Good."

She sat down and concentrated on the breakfast. Faith soon noticed that something was obviously bothering her, but she decided to wait for Joyce to leave the kitchen.

"What's wrong?" she asked when Joyce finally left.

Buffy jerked and looked at her.

"What?"

"Something's bothering you."

Buffy gulped.

"I…" She trailed off and looked down, ashamed.

"B?" Faith said, worried. "Talk to me."

Buffy gulped and looked at her.

"Angel and I… We kissed," she confessed.

Faith suddenly felt like the temperature suddenly dropped.

"Why?" she asked.

Buffy sighed, avoiding Faith's eyes.

"I don't know. He still wants me and I still care about him and before I knew what was going on, we were kissing." She sighed and looked at Faith. "I'm sorry." She hesitated for a moment. "I'd like you to come with me when I visit Angel again, I want to tell him about us." She gulped. "If you still want me, that is."

Faith stared at Buffy. She felt hurt that Buffy had cheated on her. She understood that Angel meant a lot to Buffy, and vice versa, but it was obviously bothering Buffy that she had been kissing with him. For a moment she had thought that Buffy wanted to break up with her, but then she realized that Buffy wanted them to have no secrets between them and that she wanted to be with her. She touched her hand and grinned.

"I guess your punishment will be even more severe."

Buffy laughed, relieved.

"Thank you," she said and wiped the tear that managed to slip down her cheek.

"You live here?" Mrs Post asked when she showed up at Summers' house.

"Yeah," Faith said.

"Summers?" Mrs Post asked as she entered.

"It's Buffy's house."

"You live with Buffy?" Mrs Post said, surprised.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Cause we're dating?"

"What?!" Mrs Post said, shocked. "You're dating another girl?"

"Yeah? Got a problem with that?" Faith challenged.

Mrs Post thought for a moment.

"No, it just surprised me, that's all," she lied, angry.

"So, what can I do for you?"

"Listen to me," Mrs Post said and looked around the house. Then she looked at Faith. "I'm going to be very hard on you, Faith. I will not brook insolence or laziness. And I will not allow blunders like last night's attack. You will probably hate me a great deal of the time."

Faith smile sardonically.

"You think?"

"But I will make you a better Slayer," she said and stepped closer to Faith, "and that will keep you alive. You have to trust that I am right. God only knows what Mr Giles has been filling your head with."

"Giles is okay," Faith said.

"His methods are unfathomable to me. I find him entirely confounding. But that is not important. Let him have his games and secret meetings."

"What meetings?" Faith asked.

"Oh, I don't know. Something with Buffy and her friends."

"Oh. Well, they meet more often, since they all go to school."

"And why does he let her socialize so much? It hardly seems… No matter. Would you like to do some training?"

"Training? As in kicking and punching and stabbing?"

Mrs Post smiled.

"Yes, that's the idea."

Faith hesitated for a moment. She'd much rather train with Buffy, but hey, better than be bored.

"I'm your girl. Just let me leave a note."

"Okay, you positively look depressed," Faith said when she got home and saw Buffy.

Buffy gave her a sour smile.

"Yeah. The gang found out I knew about Angel." She hesitated for a moment. "And that we were kissing," she said, looking down.

"I take it didn't go well," Faith said, sitting down, and put her arm around Buffy's shoulder.

Buffy slumped.

"It was a complete disaster. Even Gils hates me." She sighed. "At least Willow seems to be on my side. I think."

"Don't worry, they'll get around."

"I hope so." She sighed. "Listen, I'm going to the Von Hauptman crypt tonight to kill Lagos. You know, as a peace offering to Giles. Wanna come?"

"What about the glove?"

"Angel has it."

"What?" Faith said, surprised.

"Sorry, I forgot to tell you."

"Oh. And you trust him with it?"

Buffy nodded.

"Yes."

Faith took a deep breath.

"Okay. And what do we do with it?"

"I don't know. Giles is looking into it."

"Oh. So we go to Restfield and kill Lagos then."

"That's the plan."

"I'm with you."

While Buffy was sitting on a stone bench and Willow was pacing, Faith took a look around. She had a feeling Buffy and Willow needed to talk, so she gave them some space. But when she heard Buffy call her, she was there in no time. And while Buffy was occupying Lagos, Faith sneaked up on the demon from behind and grabbed his axe. Lagos turned, surprised, and Faith neatly took off his head.

"Nice work," Buffy smiled at her.

"Thanks."

"Let's go tell Giles."

"Giles!" Buffy called when they got to school. "Giles!"

She went to the book stacks and Willow went to the office.

"Buffy!" she screamed when she saw Giles, lying on the floor with bloody head.

Buffy and Faith both ran to her.

"Oh my god, Giles."

"What the hell happened?" Faith asked.

"I don't know. Will, call the paramedics."

"On it," Willow said and went to the phone.

"You sure this ain't Angel's work?" Faith asked, uncertain.

Buffy looked at her and nodded.

"Yes. Angel would have killed him."

Faith raised an eyebrow but didn't comment.

"They're coming," Willow reported.

"Okay. Will, you stay with Giles. Faith and I are going to Angel. I have a feeling that whoever did this has gone there as well."

Willow nodded and the two Slayers quickly left.

"Mrs Post!" Faith said, surprised, when she saw her Watcher chained to the wall.

"He tried to kill me!" Mrs Post screamed.

"She's lying," Angel said calmly. "She came here to use the glove."

"That's not true. He was trying to make it more stronger."

"I was using the Living Flame. It would have destroyed it."

"Okay, enough!" Buffy yelled. "Where's the glove?"

"Over there," Angel said and pointed at it.

The Slayers looked.

"How did you know he had the glove?" Buffy asked Mrs Post.

"Mr Giles told me."

"When?"

"Yesterday."

"This is getting us nowhere," Faith said.

"Faith, would you believe the word of a vicious vampire or your Watcher's?" Mrs Post asked her.

Faith hesitated, torn between the loyalty to her Watcher and the loyalty to Buffy.

"Do you believe him?" she asked Buffy.

"Yes," Buffy said.

Faith took a deep breath.

"That's good enough for me."

"Faith!" Mrs Post said, shocked.

"Okay, here's the plan," Buffy said. "Angel, even though I believe you, I know it would make others feel better if they knew you were at least chained," she said and Angel nodded in agreement. The she looked at Mrs Post. "And we're taking you back to the library until Giles comes out of the hospital. And then he's gonna have a little chat with the Council."

"What! You can't… I'm your Watcher, Faith! I demand that you release me."

"If you're clean, you'll be released, but until we're hundred percent sure that you didn't try to kill Angel, you're not going anywhere," Faith said and Mrs Post huffed.

"Faith, you chain Angel and I'll take care of Mrs Post."

Faith nodded and looked at Angel, who came closer.

Buffy quickly unchained Mrs Post and then Faith chained Angel.

"He's not going anywhere," she said after she tested the chains.

"Good. We'll see you later, Angel," she said and Angel nodded. "Faith, get the glove. But be careful, don't put it on."

Faith nodded and retrieved the glove.

"Okay, now what?" Faith asked when they got back to the library.

"We lock her up?"

"Where? The weapons locker?"

"Oh." Buffy frowned. "There are cuffs in there."

"That should do it. "I'll get them."

Faith put the glove on the table and fetched the cuffs.

"Faith…" Mrs Post started again.

"Shut up," Faith said.

"Faith…"

"One more word and I'll stuff something up your mouth."

Mrs Post glared at her, seething.

"You wanna watch her while I get Willow and Xander?" Buffy asked.

Faith thought for a moment.

"You watch her."

"Okay."

Buffy smiled at her and gave her a quick kiss. Faith then left.

After Willow destroyed the glove, the two Slayers went to the hospital, leaving Oz, Willow and Xander behind to guard Mrs Post.

"Did you see him?" Buffy asked as they walked down the street, holding hands.

"No. Willow told me." Faith thought for a moment. "You know, I'm not sure whether I would like it better if Angel was right or Mrs Post. I mean, Angel can kick ass, hell, you could say he's an honorary Slayer, at least when he has a soul, but Mrs Post, she my Watcher. I mean, Watchers are supposed to be good, right? And sure, she's a bitch, but she's my…" She trailed off, embarrassed. "Okay, Watcher," she finished, grinning sheepishly at Buffy, who chuckled.

"I get your dilemma," Buffy said and gently squeezed her hand. "Though I kinda hope Angel was right. Though not because, you know, because we used to be together. But he can help us, while Gwen is just a plain pain in the ass. I mean, she made Giles angry and that's not something you see every day." She frowned. "Okay, I made him angry too, but I really screwed up."

Faith smiled at her.

"Yeah, I guess."

"And I was thinking about telling Angel about us, when Giles comes out of the hospital."

Faith nodded.

"Okay."

Buffy smiled.

"And thank you for trusting me. You know, after Angel and I… kissed."

Faith nodded.

"It hurt. But the fact that you didn't keep it a secret from me meant a lot to me."

"At least one positive aspect."

"Yeah." She grinned at Buffy. "And B, no more cuddling."

Buffy looked at her, amused.

"Why not? Is that my punishment?"

Faith chuckled.

"No, your punishment will be much worse. This is only foreplay."

"Oh boy," Buffy said, worried.

"And?" Buffy asked when Giles hung up the phone.

Giles glanced at Mrs Post, who was still cuffed in the cage, seething.

"She used to be a Watcher, but she got kicked out a couple of years ago for misuses of dark power. They swear there was a memo."

"I'm sure," Buffy said.

"They're sending a team to retrieve her."

"Like a dead duck?" Xander asked.

Faith got up and slowly went to the cage. She stared at Mrs Post, thinking, and Buffy stared at her, a bit concerned.

"You know, you're a bitch," she finally said. "You probably got kicked out because of your incompetence."

"Don't get smart with me, you little…"

"Bitch?" Faith interrupted her and smiled. "News flash, Gwen, you're toast." She thought for a moment. "You know, I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad Angel was right. At least he's useful. You're not."

Faith turned and slowly walked back to the table.

"You okay?" Buffy asked her.

Faith smiled.

"Five by five, B." She looked at Giles. "Giles, tell the Council I don't need another Watcher."

"But…"

"I got you. Another Watcher will just complicate things. Hell, if B and I weren't together, Gwen could've poisoned me against you guys."

"I see."

"And besides, we're more coordinated if one Watcher tells us what to do. If there are two, you'll just get in one another's hair, like with her," Faith said and pointed behind her back at Mrs Post.

"A good point," Giles agreed.

"So, is this it?" Buffy asked.

"Yes, I believe so."

"Can we go home then?"

"Yes, but do come back for training."

"We will," Faith said and took Buffy's hand. "Let's go home."

Buffy smiled and they left.
