Sometimes I think that the automobile
has had a more dramatic impact
in the planning of our cities
than city planners have had!
Even though automobiles, as machines,
are not trained in the art and science
of city planning, as human beings are!
After all is considered,
and after all is said and done,
planners only set forth land uses.
Through their master plans and zoning laws,
and their subdivision regulations.
These create the future design
of our cities, planners think?
Automobiles, on the other hand,
dictate the number of our streets,
their design, where they are located.
Along with their traffic islands and signals,
as well as their public and private parking lots.
Those places to house and store them,
while we work, shop, and sleep.
Who has the greater impact
on the design of our cities,
planners or automobiles?
While planners drive automobiles,
automobiles drive planners.
And the design of the urban environment
in our cities, one and all!
