The mission of the group is to use art and communication design to explore, amplify and diffuse the point of contact between the physical world and the digital information environment - the ‘interface between the virtual and the real’.

The Group’s main interests therefore coalesce around issues in symbol, patterning, perception, representation and interpretation in situated and ambient interactive media interfaces. These concerns are refined by the strategy to support and develop activities that directly evolve out of, and/or fold back to reinforce, the wider academic and longer term course development goals of the Art Therapies, Design and Fine Art departments.

The Group has therefore clarified its interests by identifying four key interrelated areas that provide the current focus for all its research and consultancy activities. These are:

Media interfaces and semantics.

  • Entropic systems and the construction of meaning using ambient and 3D interfaces.
  • Developing and curating media interfaces for use in public spaces.
  • Psychological profiling in interface and device communication design.
  • Web-based interfaces to technical and workshop instruction.

Media interfaces and non-linear narratives.

  • Telematic and interactive distance learning systems.
  • Adaptive information systems to support the in-situ exploration of ambient information environments.

Media interfaces and the integration of graphical materials.

  • The classification and interpretation of graphical symbol systems in e-texts.
  • The classification of dynamic typography in digital environments.

Media interfaces and identity.

  • Virtuality, the post-geographic and the political.
  • Technics and identity.
  • Branding conflicts between on-line and print media in the magazine industry.
