December 28, 1996 From: trquoise Beautiful.......a couple of them brought tears to my eyes....thank you. Trquoise..
Hi Carl, I enjoyed visiting your site. You're the third photographer whose web site I've found and enjoyed; the other two are Thorsten Mann (Germany) and Fabio Cabral (Brazil). Your work is very sensitive, especially the portraits of young girls. You mentioned that you allow your work to be distributed. I edit a quarterly book arts journal, called AMPERSAND, for a non-profit organization called The Pacific Center for the Book Arts. I would like to use your image of a girl reading, if it's okay with you. Payment in copies and fame only (Isn't it always!?) Best wishes, Alastair Johnston
From Barbara (My eldest sister) Let's see where do I start....what I wrote years ago; you must remember that I was still very young and I might have been referring to something other than using your artistic talents. I have always appreciated art in almost every form. I think that you have known all along how much I admired your gifted talent as an artist and more and more I am very proud to have you as my brother. I often think of you as being one of the world's best artist....like VanGogh....in the sense that he was a great artist but also very loney at times.....maybe that is why he could paint and have better concentration during his most creative and productive years. Love, Barbara
from cindy (babycakes^) Hello Well, i finally got a chance to visit your sight -- have been having trouble running the net --mickey mouse computer, no space. The photo's are wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed them. You have terrific sight -- soul in these pic's. Will be back to visit again. Take care -- keep well. Cindy
Hi Carl, Wanted to take a few moments to tell you that I enjoyed your web site, very much. Especially the garlic section. hahahah. And I am very aware of what garlic will do for you. It is an herb, that can help to prevent many sicknesses. Including cleaning of the arteries, and lowing the blood pressure. Not that you can convince the average person of this, not even the meds. But they are slowly seeing what garlic can and will do. Carl, I have been eating garlic since I was a baby. But that could have a lot to do, with the fact that I am Italian. I think garlic was put into my formula, as an infant...hahaha.... But I truely love fresh garlic, even grow it myself. Therefor I have no nose turn up, on your reciepe. Mmm Mmmm GOOD. Carl, since you are into photograpy, the next time you see me on line, be sure to ask me for my picture. I think you may enjoy seeing the effect that I have put into that picture. (Oregon , U.S.A. ) Hi.. It's me, your niece Cynthia Oyen. I just looked at your Website and I am really impressed. You have a lot of great work. I especially like the picture of my mom and Lita. She has a copy that I have seen since I was really young, but I did not realize you were the one who photographed it. Have a Merry Christmas.... Cynthia
( Maine, U.S.A.) Greetings! This is "kimbah" from #happyzone. Finally got connected to your server tonight and got to view approximately 85% of your pictures. I will finish tomorrow night, too sleepy now. They are all quite wonderful. I love the different emotions that they bring on as if they are alive. I messaged you tonight but perhaps we were too lagged. Do come visit us again in #happyzone and thanks for sharing your wonderful talent with us. peace, love, and happiness always, Colleen
From: Eben Klopper (South Africa) Hi Carl I went through all the stuff that you sent me. Excellent photography ! Sometimes I think that you need a special situation to create the perfect photo but looking at your stuff makes me realise that any or most situations can be a potential good photograph. I like to mention a few pictures which I personally liked more and they are, in no specific order; ceramics, cat2, cattails, pointof1/2, Dandeli, Darlene1, foxtail, Haggapar, Norengla, Swan95. And then there is a very interesting one called Saabscan. I hope I've spelled all of it correctly. I also received your new mail but I have been unable to connect to your server for some reason. I'll let you know when I've done so. Thanks once again for all the pictures Eben
Dear Carl Thank you for giving me the opportunity to visit with the images on your homepage. I have been seriously involved with photography for the past 4 years. In studying the art of much of the accepted avant-garde here in the US I am struck by the lack of emotion conveyed by the work. I have tried to maintain an open mind, and have begun to question my own ability to respond to what the artist felt at the time the photograph was made. In viewing your work, however, I find the images deeply moving and charged with emotion. I can't describe the experience in words, so let me simply say that I like to view your work often because it makes me feel good! Thank you for making it available on the web. I think you should add a warning to the introduction on your page, that viewers should not attempt to visit your work without an ample supply of tissues! I hope that someday our paths will cross. Until then I wish you every happiness. Sincerely, John B. Hopkins
Carl, I'm happy that HN wrote about your website and I hope that this makes more people appreciate your art. Pages like yours are what makes the "net" worth surfing. I don't have HN though but Håkan does so I'll tell him about it. Kristofer
Hi Carl, I got your pictures. Thanks for sending them. I was able to get into your URL as well. You have a very good eye for your subjects. I was impressed with your style. I'll be checking your file often to see if you have updated it. I wouldn't want to miss any new material you wish to share. Thank you once again for your thoughtfulness. I hope to see you on the net another time. "h10" Lynette
Carl, I really like your web page. It is so large that it will take me some time to properly look through it all...and I do want to look at it all. See ya later on iguide. Patty
I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you I love your work. I too was born and raised in Curundu. On 7th street. My nickname was Cito-- Talbott. Like you, I studied photography in California, Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. I even worked for awhile for the Panama Canal as an Official Photographer. I majored in Photojournalism and Film and opted to put my art to work with the networks, CBS, ABC, NBC. I got tired of traveling and living out of a suitcase and worked for the Government. I directed and produce dozens of training films for the U.S. Army and USAF. Yes it was a waste of talent. Luckily I got into computers and managed to land a job first with Microsoft as a tech support engineer on Windows 95 and then as a tri-lingual engineer on the Dow project working in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. I miss my work in video and photography. I am still using the Hasselblads and the old Linhoff on weekends. I live in Colorado Springs. So the tropics are a long way away. No Curundu Theater here! My Mom passed away two years ago so I did go back to take care of all the details. I hardly recognized Curundu. Trailers and a clubhouse/bowling alley that would have given old man Bates the creeps. The old basketball court was there but run down. Albrook Airfield was overgrown and not much there. Panama on the other hand had boomed. It was a maze of high rises and new construction. Well I have to run. I have a call from Brazil holding. Good Luck! Arnie "El Gordo" Talbott
June 29, 1997 From: Echoconcep Thanks for the stroll through such lovely photos. There were so many I loved, but the one that evoked the smells, tastes, sounds from childhood was #69 - Robin. I felt the calluses grow on the small hands of a fourth grader. Mother wanted to protect & keep soft the hands of the child she believed would become a violin virtuoso. The thrill of swinging into 'infinity' won out over any promise of a career in music. Wind in the hair, skirts flying high, earth left below, the best, the very best! You're so creative & talented. Thanks for sharing your art. Thankyou, Mary
September 1997 Hi...I'm a 17 yr. old high school student. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed browsing through your website. Those pictures on there bought great admiration from me(I wish I could take and develop such pictures). I would love to be a photographer someday like yourself..I know that money is something you don't necessarily think about when u love what u do...but I just wanted to know (for my parents' sake, who think that art is rubbish and a waste of time) how much do u make out of photography? Another question is, where do u sell your photographs in order to make a living? Hopefully, I will hear your response...and thank you for reading this. It would help me greatly..thanks Terveet
December 15, 1997 From: "Joakim Hoffsten" I must say that I was impressed by the feeling You catch, in each and every one of your pictures...Just by using black and white make one feel the picture, not only see it..... It's always nice to see pictures of an artist who knows how to use the camera and the darkroom to express themselves...... Joakim
December 8, 1997 From: Grape99 (Michelle 15 yr. Santa Cruz) Looked at your website and I think you are a really good photographer. All of your pictures make you think. I really like the B&W. I don't think that color pictures give you that feeling. Black and whites are more emotional. Well, I will write you more later. Grape99
January 15, 1998 From: GLITTA2960 Your photographs are magnificent. I am also a photographer, I'm just getting started. I am doing an independant study where I go to school and it has truly broadened my mind. Thank you for making your photos available to all of us who care. Kristen
January 23, 1998 From: Irisveil Quick note on your webpage......just started browsing through it......and my first impressions are ...... amazing .....you've captured humanity at it's purest form....I especially like Darlene and Teresa......gonna go back to more. Peace, Iris
February 4, 1998 Gingerbery Wonderful photos and poetry.........you seem to be a very sensitive and expressive man......which is a rarity in this day and age........this is Gingerbery writting to you under my other screen name.......the one I use with a profile ....so the people who I speak to can see the real me.......remember Doris Juanita Yelva? aka Bonnie.......a fair lass.......born in Va....father from Stockholm.......yearning to visit her homeland....and possibly connect with you when she is there........would love to chat on an occasion to get to know this mysterious man...... looking forward to connecting at one point........Enjoy Gingerbery
February 9, 1998 From: Sunnffunn What a rare treat. I came online to piles of junk mail and your invitation to visit your site. It was a great delight. Hard to take in such a prolific artist in one visit. Here are my comments thus far. Photographs: very direct, intense, emotion ever present =definitely an art form. Paintings here I found a bit more whimsy but definitely serious art. Ceramics: I am not a potter. I adore pots. These are wonderful. I am no collector nor can I help you in that way nor is my art what yours is. This is a link to a few pieces but I have abundantly more. I wish I could share especially those that show greater emotion. Sunnffunn
GenXBlah February 28, 1998 GenXBlah: It's loading even as I type! :)
ToothOwl: great....enjoy... (hopefully) GenXBlah: Hey! I love photography! I only had a semester of b&w in highschool...but I'd still like to set up my own darkroom someday! Yep ...reading it right now...the way you talk about catching a memory that you can return to...that's the way I feel about writing. :) ToothOwl: nice...... GenXBlah: Great story...just finished it...and so far, I love the pics! Especially the cat! :) I have two of my own! "Slight Sweet Shyness" is adorable!!!!! ToothOwl: I almost,..almost didn't put it in.... GenXBlah: I love it!!!!!! It's just sooooo sweet...soooo innocent...just beautiful...but I'm a sucker for a cute kid! The oils on masonite are really cool, too! Yeah, I already looked at your ceramics...I really liked the bleeding heart? Is that what it was called? And the hand shaped stuff...not that the electric potters wheel stuff was bad..I just liked the other stuff better, and, btw...LOVE "Retired Elder listening to..." whatever the rest of the title is.. ToothOwl: I'm so glad that you made the effort to see my work... GenXBlah: Hey, listen...I've really, really enjoyed talking to you and visiting your site..I've saved it to my favorite places for perusal at a later date. But I have to scram...it's 1am here and I still have a midterm to study for! Look me up sometime if you wish! :) ToothOwl: hopefully it will have been a nice coincidence for you to stumble across me. ;^) GenXBlah: VERY nice! Thank you for letting me see your work! Continued luck in your future!

March 19, 1998 From: LoveTree9 Hi Carl I finally had a chance to read your bio. Very interesting! I have sent a number of my friends to your online gallery and they all told me they love your work! You have inspired me in my own art, and also with your gallery idea. I have thought about doing an online gallery before, but now I am considering it more seriously. I think it is so important for artists to be "seen" without it costing them a fortune! I hope you are well. Keep in touch! Annie
March 25, 1998 From: Kimizzi Dear Carl Toothman, I found your photography just beautiful. That was one of the descriptions that came to mind. You Sir, are truly an artist. Your Art is just what this Country needs to see. Such talent and love is expressed through your lens that most people would only dream. Your passions for life leap from every photo. Thank-you for including me into your dream. I am a lover of Angels, I would love to see some art of the heavens with angels. You can do it I know. Please keep your art with such meaning. It is truly a blessing. The Tallest Angel Kimizzi

Your work is incredible. I especially enjoyed the faces of the people -- such emotion you have captured. Your ceramic work is beautiful also. The delicate lines reminded me of serenity. Thanks for sharing your work with me. I shall return to the site again. Jacque

May 27, 1998 From: MCDALE1 Carl, I am writing to you from the States. I was on-line at 11pm EST and wondered if anyone was on-line in Sweden at that time, and you were the only person. What is the time difference between Florida and Sweden??? So, from there I found your web page. I especially liked Pacific Palisades and Death Valley. To me they both had an Ansel Adams quality about them. I hope you find that to be a compliment. I also liked your pictures of Darlene and Teresa. What beautiful little girls. The age of innocence seems to be disappearing earlier and earlier these days. Their eyes reflect how a child should look. Thanks for sharing your art !!! I enjoyed !!! Dale
June 6, 1998 From: SeaScape35 I was so impressed with you photos. You have such feeling in your work. I love you and I don't even know you! I am completely enamoured with your web page.. I was soooo touched by your children's pictures... "Slight Sweet Shyness" so reminded me of myself as a girl...I am now a full grown woman however I know this shy girl has never left my soul... I did not even recognize that she was still in my thoughts until I saw your work... thank you for reminding me of something long forgotten... I feel as though you know me. Your work touches me sooo deeply .. that I felt compelled to write you again... I too am an artist and I can feel your soul in your work... I am very impressed Allie
June 8, 1998 Carl, Thank you for sharing such lovely works of art. Kind of a window to your soul. I have not been able to enjoy them all, but when I have more time I will go back and take a look. Thank you again Sincerely, Mike
