To My Mother
To My Mother
May 25, 1998
I sing to the child inside of me
of counting toes
of planting rows
of sunflowers in the spring
I sing to the child inside of me
of music mine
learning rhymes
and following the honeybees
I sing to the child inside of me
of climbing tree
afternoon teas
and jelly on his nose
I sing to the child inside of me
of misty rainbows
little minnows
and dancing in the rain
And when I held him in my arms
I sang for all to hear
of such a joy released from me
new universes were reborn
We sang of Hemmingway, Whitman and truths
of golden hues
borrowed blues
and fairies in the woods
And when he sang his destiny
to catch his golden dreams
out the door
filled with lore
he planted diamonds in the streams
He sings to the child inside of her
of a Grandmother who would come
who'll count his toes
and plant his rows
of sunflowers in the spring.
