Jennie at the Chesapeake on July 17, 1996, with Jacqueline Phaedra Hernandez. Jacqueline was almost a year old -- born on July 27, 1995. (Maureen's birthday, and the day before AJ's.)
Since then, Jennie has had a fourth child -- Desmond Nile Hernandez, born on July 9, 1997.
The last time I saw Jackie, in September 1994, she was talking about Jennie (among many other things) with my friend Jacky Lewis (whom I'd picked up at the Greyhound station in Baltimore after dropping Lois off at the airport). Both of them were amused at the new name Jennie had adopted for herself: Ginger Beamish.
Now she is just plain Jennie again.

I hadn't seen Jennie and her sons in years, and when I looked at the photos people sent me of this day at the Chesapeake I wondered at first who these tall young men could be.
The last time I saw them was in 1990, when Joel and Unity and I, on our trip out from Iowa, came from Yosemite to spend a night at her place in Pacific Grove.
Robert and Eric were much littler then. They looked up to Joel and Unity with shy admiration.

Robert and Eric are the sons Jennie had with her first husband, Larry Petersen. Now she is married to Gerry Hernandez and lives in Santa Barbara -- just a short trip down the coast, but all the years I've been in Santa Cruz I haven't gotten down there to see her!.
