A truly amazing person
By Tim Wood
Columbia lost an amazing individual last week.
Houston "Buddy" Crozier III was my next-door neighbor. His long fight with Lupus ended when he died last week.
Houston, his wife, Nancy, and their dogs, Nikon and Kodak, put up with our basketballs rolling into their yard and my sometimes infrequent lawn maintenance.
When I moved to thehouse and Daily Herald co-workers found out that I lived next door to Houston, they all smiled and told me that I was in for an interesting experience.
To my delight, I discovered that we had much in common. Besides our newspaper connection (Houston had worked as a Daily Herald photographer), we shared interests in rock bands with horns, audio engineering, electronics, the Internet, photography and many other things.
We swapped CDs, videos, magazines, electronic parts and who knows what else. His illness restricted his activities, and at times we wouldn't talk for weeks. But then, out of the blue, he'd call to ask about something.
He always had a positive attitude toward life. Despite his illness, he was always planning ahead. We had discussed going to a concert in late July.
It may have been that optimistic outlook that helped him outlive all predictions.
For the short three years I knew Houston, I thought I was helping him. Now I realize that I had it backwards - he was the one who inspired and helped me.
