THE PURPOSE OF TONGUE SPEAKING IN THE APOSTOLIC ERA

By Edwin Jardinel

The prophecy of the Old Testament prophet Joel concerning tongue speaking was fulfilled in the early stage of the church age, definitely, during Pentecost and the apostolic era (Joel 2:28; Acts 2).  The "last days" in Joel 2:28, refer to the church age (which is the last dispensation prior to the visible return of Christ) and the events of Christ's return.  However, this does not necessarily mean that tongues will continue throughout the church age (I Cor.13:).  During the time when the Bible was not yet completed, God spoke directly or through His chosen men.  Isaiah, the prophet, stated the purpose of tongues as he foretold that God would speak to His people by means of other tongues (Isaiah 28:11).   The church in the New Testament was founded   and commissioned by Jesus Christ to proclaim God's message, baptize, and teach the truth (Matt.28: 18-20).  When Christ ascended to heaven, members of the Lord's church assembled and tarried in Jerusalem as commanded by the Lord, to receive the empowering of the Holy Ghost in their witness (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8).  On the day of Pentecost, the assembly was baptized in the Holy Spirit and the disciples spoke in tongues (Acts 2:1-4, 7-8).  Speaking in tongue, means speaking in a foreign language.  The ability to speak in foreign languages without efforts in learning them is a demonstration of God's power.  It was a temporary gift because it ceased upon the completion of the Bible (I Cor.13:8, 10; James 1:25).  Such gift from God given during the early stage of the church had a wonderful purpose (Eph.4: 7,12).
