Passenger Lists and other Records

Passenger lists and associated documents are one of the most useful resources to a genealogist with Australian ancestors - they all came from somewhere else, and that vital link is recorded on these documents. In researching my own "First Families" I have obtained a number of passenger lists and other documents not freely available on the Internet - and as a way of giving something back to the genealogists out there who have helped me so much, have transcribed these. Apart from making them available here (this site is of limited interest after all!) I have given them to the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild for publication, and to Peter Larson's Eastern Australian Shipping Index - two very valuable sites for researchers. If others out there keep suporting these sites, one day all these records will be freely available online.

Another fantastic resource which is growing all the time is the NSW Archives (State Records) site - they have the Assisted Immigrants to NSW between 1845 and 1859 online, indexed and fully searcheable - try their Immigrant Search facility if you can't find what you want here. They will be putting other date ranges of the same information online over the next year, so keep checking back with them. But bear in mind private sites like this are often the result of us having accessed and transcribed the original documents, some not held in the NSW Records - so check out our sites too!
