"Frederick" 1827 from Portsmouth to Sydney & Port Stephen

The "Frederick" sailed from Rotterdam on 5 July 1827, then loaded at Portsmouth for Australia. She was a 401 ton barque-rigged sailing vessel, under the command of Captain William Legge. She loaded a mixture of cargo and passengers - in addition to the 4 cabin passengers and 23 steerage passengers, she carried 8 merino rams, 312 French merino ewes, 7 horses and other stores for the Australian Agricultural Co. The vessel was under charter to the company, and most of the passengers were contracted to work for the AA Co. in the new settlement of Newcastle.

She sailed from Portsmouth on 11 July 1827, and by September had reached Rio de Janiero, where she re-provisioned. From there she sailed for Port Jackson (Sydney), arriving more than 4 months later on 23 November 1827. After clearing customs there, the ship continued to Port Stephen (Newcastle) where the voyage ended.

The table below indicates the families who were on board by name of the husband - children and wifes names are not listed other than to indicate they were on board. I have a considerable amount of data on the offspring of the Baker family listed - should you wish to know more on them please visit my Genealogy section or else email me.

The data here is extracted from Norman Baker's excellent book "John Baker - Pioneer Gardener" and was originally taken from "Pure Merinos and Others" - PA Pemberton's shipping lists for the AA Company.
