NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC

Contemporary Native American music ranges from the rap/hip-hop of Litefoot, Julian B. and the Rez Boyz to the haunting flute compositions of R. Carlos Nakai. In between are such talents as long-time musical artist Buffy Sainte-Marie, country-rock singer/composer Bill Miller, poet/activist John Trudell, the folk-inspired Canadian duo Kashtin, and many others.

Traditional Native music provides a rich and varied source for these contemporary musicians, who often blend drums, flutes, songs, and other elements of traditional music with modern rhythms and instruments to give their music a unique sound. Their lyrics speak of the passion and pain of Native cultures and individuals in the modern world, as well as more the conventional subjects of love and loss and longing.

The links below will lead you to some of the Native music sites on the Web, many of which include audio samples, as well as biographical info and pics. Some sites feature individual artists, some relate to Native music as a whole, and many concern the musical traditions of Tribes across the continent.
