The following are Diane's recommendations for Books
and Web Sites about Norway.
Books:
-
The three volumes of Kristin Lavransdatter written by Sigrid
Undset are wonderful reading! Undset an incredible storyteller, as
well as a scholar whose knowledge of Icelandic sagas, medieval romance,
mystic literature, Chaucer and Shakespeare all resonate in her work.
The recent translation by Tiina Nunnally is excellent and includes
interesting introductions by several scholars. The paperback versions
published by Penguin are The Wreath (ISBN 0141180412), The
Wife ISBN 0141181281, and for The Cross (ISBN 0141182350).
-
The Saga of Erik the Viking (ISBN 0140322612) is written
by Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) and illustrated by Michael Foreman.
These are great stories for young people written in the tradition
of sagas. This book is advertised for children aged 9 through 12,
but adults will like it also. It won the Children's Book Award from
the Federation of Children's Book Groups.
-
Finds of Rogaland: from Ice Age to Middle Ages (ISBN 82-7760-008-9)
is not only a catalog of the collection at the Archeology Museum in
Stavanger; it includes interesting and comprehensive essays about
how the early people survived, their daily lives and beliefs. Amazon
says the book is out of print, but it is available from the Archeology
Museum in Stavanger.
- Norsk Folkemuseum (ISBN 82-900-36-50-7) is not merely a catalog,
but includes essays that explain factors that have made Norway unique.
It is available from the Norsk Folkemuseum.
