Lots and Lots of Apples

By Jennifer Arbour

There is an orchard of apple trees that belong to a farmer named M. Guy.  M. Guy is a farmer and besides milking cows, he grows apple trees.  He thinks the apples will be ready to be picked in a week or two.

  M. Guy's wife and his three children speak French, but they understand a bit of English.  They have English friends and neighbours that live close by their farm.

Mike Andrews owns a small airplane that he uses for pleasure.  Mike Andrews is a doctor and is well known and liked in the county.

One-day young Mary Andrews walked by the apple tree orchard and stopped to look at the delicious sight of shiny apples.  She picks an apple off a tree and then walks over to the Guy's farm.  She offers twenty-five cents for the apple she picked from the tree.

"You can keep the money Mary", says M. Guy,  "...and in a couple of weeks, I’ll give you and your father a basket of apples."

"Thanks you M. Guy", says Mary.  " If you like I can come and pick them up."

"Tell your father to use my wheel barrel", says M.Guy.

Mary told her father that evening about M.Guy's gift.  "Dad could you give M. Guy a ride in your air plane as a thank you gift?”

"It depends if he can fit into the passenger seat.  He's somewhat over weight, you know.”

"Maybe I should tell him to go on a diet of eating apples."

"It wouldn't hurt, Mary."

Mary being the only child of a widowed Doctor knew a lot about eating healthy.

"Can I go over to M Guy's farm tomorrow to discuss it with him dad?"

"It's fine by me."

The next day Mary went over to the Guy's farm.  She said hello to Mme. Guy and the children and asked to speak to M. Guy.

"I have good news M. Guy and I have bad news.”  She said.  "I asked my father if he would give you a ride on his air plane in return for giving us all those apples.  And he said, you need to loose weight in order to fit in the passenger seat.”

"I see.” he said.

"Why don't you eat only apples for three days? You could loose ten pounds.”  Said Mary.

"My dear, it would be so wonderful flying over the neighboring farms and land that I wish I could go.”  He said.

"It is the best way I know for loosing weight quickly.” said Mary.

After the three days had passed M. Guy had lost a lot of weight.  He was ready to take a ride on the airplane.  Dr. Andrews flew M.Guy over a lot of the county.

"You see, M. Guy", said Dr. Andrews, "when you eat like a bird you can fly like one too!”
