The Mountains

The Dwarves and Gnomes are not the only races living in the mountains.  There are more species and races in Raethania that I can describe to you in this dream, but I will tell you of a few.

You have read of the Ents before.  These marvelous tree beings exist here in the mountain ranges of Raethania.  For every species of tree, there is a race of Ents.  They are peaceful creatures, dedicated to maintaining the balance of the forest climes.  Their magick is a natural sort.  Healing devoted to plants and forest animals.  Camouflage and concealment are among their specialties.  Though they speak their own language, they can communicate with a wide range of forest life.  They can also understand any being that has violence for the forest in their heart.  They can be fierce when danger threatens and experience great remorse when causing harm to any being, even when such harm is done in defense of the forest.  Because of this, they are known to heal their enemies and the enemies of the forest after battle.

Roccs also live in the mountains, though they are not as common here as they are in the desert areas.  The higher degree of moisture causes them problems and they are more subject to breakage by freeze/thaw and the growth of plant roots.

High in the peaks of the mountains live many species of large birds.  Most of them are highly intelligent and if treated with respect can become friendly.  The Dwarves have forged many alliances with the Albatrosai, a bird with a wing span of twelve feet that is capable of flying non-stop for six months.  The Gnomes are afraid of the larger birds, being smaller than the Dwarves, but have many friends among the lesser birds of the mountains.

Dragons are also common in Raethania, and they too, work to maintain balance in the land.  Many species live in the renewal zones and assist in the process of regeneration.  There are dragons that thrive in water, some that live exclusively in the sandy areas of the deserts, and of course, those that live in the mountains.

The dragons that live in the mountains live mainly in the higher reaches, most living on or near the highest peaks.  These dragons can be as large as a large human building such as a castle, though there are dragons in all size ranges, even some as small as squirrels, that live in the forest edges.

The refreshment pools and atlantia are also abundant throughout the mountains.  All trees and shrubs with a few exceptions, bear tasty and nourishing fruit.  The fruit is freely available to all, but one must be careful to take only what is need, or the trees will retaliate and take some of one's substance in the interests of maintaining balance.  There is a legend of a human who had a tendency towards greed and gluttony.  He came into the mountains and grew jades in regards to the cornucopia of food available.  He began harvesting more fruit than he could possibly eat, and hording it in a cave.  He was quick and clever and managed to avoid the retaliation of the trees while plucking the fruit.  The legend says, that the trees slowly moved to surround the cave.  In the morning, when he tried to exit the cave to forage for more fruit, he found the entrance blocked by a solid wall of tree trunks.  Turning back he found that his hoard of fruit had become rotten and useless overnight.  Small snakes, frogs and lizards crawled all over the fruit making noises of despair.  In terror he hurled himself at the wall of tree trunks.  The trunks opened a path into the interior of the copse of trees that had taken root in front of the cave.  The man was bound by root and branch.  Tap roots crept into his flesh and kept him alive while the trees slowly absorbed his body.  The legend tells that for every piece of fruit he took beyond his need, he lived a day.  The hoard was enormous, and two generations of Fae were renewed before he was finally fully absorbed by the trees.
