L'amour existe encore
This song by Luc Plamondon was popularized by
Céline Dion. An English-Canadian aritst, Michael Burgess, has
recorded it in French. In the notes accompanying his CD, there is
an English translation, that I reproduce below. The purpose of
this translation is to explain the meaning of the song to an
audience that does not understand French. It is not intended to
be sung. The third column represents my adaptation to produce a
version to be sung in English.
The rhyming scheme makes it impossible to
translate the song in a very direct way. Note that in the
original song the rhymes with "corps" and
"doute" are repeated many times, more than in the
average song. I accepted the challenge of reproducing a similar
if not identical rhyming scheme, but this required me to invent
new ways to express the ideas of the song. Nonetheless I feel
that the adaptation expresses the essence of the original song.
