On Wednesday March 3, 1998 the Vancouver Sun printed an article and it contained perhaps the only real truth that I've been able to identify with since my niece disappeared December 27, 1998. The article contained 18 pictures of the missing girls from the Downtown Eastside, a large one was at the bottom with bold lettering saying. 'Who we will not see tomorrow'.
Marcie was born in Toronto June 2, 1978 and moved to British Columbia in 1994 with her mother Gloria. Marcie attended school in Abbottsford in the same year but never finished. She had deleveloped quite a taste for pot so much so, she never could get enough interest to stay in school.
Marcie never had a chance to experience what most girls just take for granted. Things like having a job, going to school with girlfriends or boyfriends, wearing that special dress on a date, or even a simple thing like getting a drivers licence.
By 1997 Marcie was a full blown junkie getting her drugs the only way she could - working in the sex trade in Downtown Vancouver. Many, many times, I almost had her ready to go to detox. But because of the new harm reduction and prevention programs a lot of the detoxes have been closed down, there are only two detoxes in the Vancouver area. Marcie would say things like, "If it's so bad why are they legalizing herion and why do they have all them needle exchange programs?" I would just say, that it's another way to get you young girls off the streets - "In Body Bags"!
At times I wish I wouldn't say things like that, but her and her sister Melanie were literately disintegrating day by day. Today though, her sister Mel isn't on the streets anymore and she has found a new way to live without getting high and working the streets.
But for Marcie, she just disappeared on December 27, 1998 at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning around the corner from the Drake Hotel. Her boyfriend was waiting for her at her moms and she still had Christmas presents she hadn't even opened. Marcie's mother who is my sister now lives with me and we pray alot that someday somewhere we may get an answer or have some closure. But for now I'm putting this page up in case someone may know something and give us a call. My email address is skipink@home.com. and my name is Skip Marcella.
Two more woman were found dead Sept 23, 1999. 27 women are still missing. Four of the missing women have been found. Linda Jean Coombes and Karen Anne Smith. Both deceased. Rose Ann Jansen and Patricia Kay Perkins were found alive by Vancouver Police. But the actual number of missing women may be much higher.
