November 4, 1999

Radio week continues!

I just want to give a heads-up
that the 1999 Massey Lectures
are approaching.

<for people who know what I'm talking about>

1999 Massey Lectures:
Robert Fulford,"The Triumph of Narrative"

They are on from November 15-19. Mark your calendar.

<for people who have no idea what I'm yammering on about>

The Massey Lectures are an annual event and are put on by the University of Toronto and the CBC show, IDEAS.

("IDEAS is a series prepared
for people who just enjoy thinking.")

Past Massey lecturers include:

Northrop Frye:
"The Educated Imagination"

John Kenneth Galbraith:
"The Underdeveloped Country"

Martin Luther King :
"Conscience for Change"

Claude Levi-Strauss:
"Myth and Meaning"

Jane Jacobs:
"Canadian Cities and Sovereignty Association"

Carlos Fuentes:
"Latin America: At War with the Past"

Noam Chomsky:
"Necessary Illusions"

Ursula Franklin:
"The Real World of Technology"

John Ralston Saul:
"The Unconscious Civilization"

(my fave = my fave)

There has been Massey lectures from 1961 to today... with the exception of 1996. They didn't think futurist Robert Theobald's work was good enough.

You can listen to the lectures in RealAudio as they are being broadcast from the IDEAS website. And, if you miss it, don't fret as they have made available RealAudio archives of the most recent lectures.

Books of the lectures are available from House of Anansi Press, and transcripts of past IDEAS programmes can be found at my local library.
