Because for every $3.33 you pay for an issue, about $2.12
goes back to Stay Free!. Whereas Stay Free! makes at best 50 cents from issues at chain stores and newsstands (those that actually pay us), and a little over a dollar from independent record stores. (Four Manhattan stores that direct deal are noteworthy exceptions: St. Marks' Books, Other Music, Mondo Kim's. and See Hear.) Magazine distribution is evil - by industry standards, you're a huge success if half of the issues you send to distributors sell. The rest get thrown away.

This is another way I justify my healthy magazine habit. In case you are wondering, I forgo buying CDs and other vices in order to subscribe to the magazines of my dreams. But I keep them all and one day I hope to give my collection of alt.culture.magazines to some groovy library.

Or, failing that, I hope my magazines will one day win the World Series!
