September 15, 1999

I've recently been writing on my take on matters high-tech. I'd now like to report on something wonderfully low-tech.

Chalk.

Chalk is big. It's very 1999.

The little kids who live beside me decorate the sidewalk in front of my abode on an almost weekly basis with pictures of faces and flowers.

The university kids have decorated their local campus with notices of upcoming events and of frat and sorority rushes. A local cafe has copped the style and has done some guerrilla advertising as well.

Chalk is great. It's communication that isn't punishable - like graffiti - because of it's impermanence. It's cheap, it's effective and it washed out in the rain.

Not unlike these electronic transmissions.
