My friend Angie sent me a heads-up in response to a bit I wrote about romantic endings. In the latest Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, there's a piece called "Go Forth and Multiply: Unwanted Pregnancy on Film". The gist of the piece is that a baby is the only 'happy ending' allowed when there is an unwanted pregnancy in the film. That is, of course, unless the character has a convenient miscarriage that 'isn't her fault' just like in that piece of Gen-X dreck, Singles. It's hard to think of
one movie that is an exception to this "rule".
[ since this was written, there was a great article from Salon that heaped praise on High Fidelity for finally portraying abortion in a film with a happy ending ] |
