Ok, the presidential vote is almost over. And for us folk in Canada, the civic vote is over and now our federal election can proceed with our undivided attention. This is why, after a month of elections, the time is ripe for a referendum.

You see, Alliance leader Stockwell Day has promised that, if elected, his party will allow any issue brought forth by a petition of 3% of the electorate (approximately 350,000 Nucks) to a national referendum.

A Canadian referendum, incidentally, costs approximately $150 million.

Now, to only contest this referendum idea on monetary grounds alone would be a poor thing to do. This is why I so like the petition created by the folks at This Hour Has 22 Minutes (if you don't understand the name, it's an updated reference to the name of a CBC news program called This Hour Has Seven Days which ran from October 1964 to May 1966. The 22 minutes comes from the fact that a 30 minute TV show is actually 22 minutes long with 8 minutes set aside for commercials)

They have put forth their own petition:

"We demand that the government of Canada force Stockwell Day to change his first name to Doris"

If you are Canadian, please take this pledge.
You know I have.
