Now there's usually a steady diet of the first two subject matters, but I have been a little light on the magic realism as of late. Which is why it delights me so to pass on this wonderful bit of info about one of my favourite visual artists (whose work could be described as magic realism of a Canadian sort) Charles Patcher. According to this article that he wrote in The Globe and Mail, Patcher was contacted by the Canadian Ministry of Transport some years ago. They called to ask permission to use the image of a moose in one of his paintings for their new moose crossing signs. Charles said yes. And so when you come across a moose crossing sign in Canada, you are actually looking at part of a painting called Mooseplunge. |
