Sometimes I think of my brain as a sponge (although more and more often I think of it as a sieve) but this wonderful article from Saturday Night Magazine has convinced me that the brain is more like a muscle...

BUILDING A BETTER BRAIN
As a child, Barbara Arrowsmith Young suffered from a brain dysfunction that had her labeled both "gifted" and "retarded". She learned how to fix her own disability and now teaches children how to do the same.

... and as such, has made me re-think such educational practices as rote learning and handwriting exercises.

It's been so long since I've read an article that rocked my world. I must be suffering from burnout.
