WORLD WAR II:
Scenes From a Soldier's Point of View

The image below is another rather complicated one to look at. It is their 50 caliber machine gun, as noted at the bottom of the sketch. To the left you see the annotation "Maison Blanche", which if you recall from the list of places they passed through, was one of the villages they were in. On the barrel of the weapon you see the soldiers named it "Honey". In the center of the weapon, there is a swastika with the words "Death Dealer" around it. In the background there are some more firing aircraft. A powerful picture, indeed.

On the lighter side, here we see "The Duke" longing for love! "Anything between 16 to 60" says he was really longing!

The image below is an interesting one. First off, the annotation at the bottom reads "ADVANCE AND BE RECOGNIZED". Then we see that it's "sad Sack Manion", and he looks like he's living up to his nickname by the expression on his face. Notice the cap of snow on his helmet. At first this image is disturbing because he has a gun pointed at a baby, but upon explanation by my grandfather, I understood that the baby is the New Year Baby symbolizing 1943, as drawn on the baby's hat.

Last but not least is yet another picture that shows how rough the going really was. The annotation in the lower right hand corner reads,"February Morn Weekly Bath". It really needs no explanation, but there are a few things to point out. On the tree, you see his belongings hanging. Over towards the left near the two trees, there is written the word, "BAR". And the name on top, "BILL", "ME", means that my grandfather drew this as himself. He sure looks cold!
