serval

Tonga and Kongo~~>
- two white-footed servals born at Easy Street to Frosty and Lucky, these guys are like true domesticated housecats. They love to be carried about, and will play with anybody and anything that comes into their cat-a-tat. Here they are shown playing with their friend (and mine!), Kenny.
<~~Frosty
- a male White Footed Serval born 1/1/95 here to Daisy and Mufasa. He was the runt, and naturally Don's favorite. He is not quite as affectionate as a bottle raised baby, but his rare genes required that we leave him with his mother as long as possible to assure that he learned about being a cat before learning to be a pet.

Serengeti and Kalahari~~>
- two female Servals born to Cheyenne and Bongo on September 16, 1996. Serengheti is distinctively larger than her sister Kalahari. She loves to purr and give give kisses. We call her Sara for short.
Kalahari is just as sweet as her sister, Serengeti. Despite her size, she loves to eat. We call her Kali for short.

This medium-sized cat is found in the same habitat as the Leopard - mainly in the savanna of Central and Southern Africa. Servals will not compete with the Leopard for food as they have a much different appetite and hunt much smaller prey. The Serval dwells mostly near water, where there is plentiful vegetation. It hunts at dawn and dusk, killing and eating rodents, shrews, snakes, beetles, frogs, and grasshoppers. It has lean, long legs that it will use to catch fish from the water.

The Serval has large, funnel-shaped ears that swivel to pinpoint the source of a noise. It also has two white markings on the back of each ear (white flashes) which are used when communicating with other cats. For example, to express aggression, the Serval's ears will be held upright. This serves as an aggressive message to other cats. The white flashes are also used to help kittens or cubs follow their mother in dark forests or at night. The Serval is sometimes known as the "giraffe-cat" as it has a very long neck and long front limbs.

The Serval can weigh up to 40 pounds, with head and body length up to three feet, two inches, tail length up to one foot, six inches, and shoulder height up to two feet. It has no fixed breeding period. The female will give birth to one to four offspring after a gestation period of 73 days.

other servals found at easy street

Nairobi - a male Serval born in 1993 came to us on 7/7/94 from a Pet Shop owner, who was afraid that some small child may be bitten by her otherwise fabulously tame adult male cat. He was raised in a pet shop, surrounded by people and walks well on a leash and enjoys riding in the car. He never knew how much fun a cat could have until he met the female Servals here on Easy Street.

Muffy - a female Serval born 6/16/93 came to us on 7/21/93 with Fluffy and Tuffy. She was the sweetest of the three and broke her leg when she was about four months old by jumping off the kitchen cabinet, with one leg down through the cabinet drawer handle. With a huge cast on her leg she jumped back up on the counter, but missed and broke another leg. The poor thing hobbled around in two casts for weeks, but despite the pain and all of the medicating and cast changing she remained angelically sweet. We learned the importance of a properly balanced diet with her, and now supplement our regular Mega-C vitamins with Calcium for the first year.

Bongo - a male Serval born in 1990 who came to us at an auction 6/25/94. He had been raised as a house pet by a woman who could no longer afford to feed and care for him. She warned us that he doesn't like people in dark pants or uniforms. He has the most beautiful, big brown eyes ever to grace a Serval face he gets very aggressive over food, but is otherwise gentle.

Gator - a female Serval born in 1990 moved to Easy Street 4/6/94. she had lived her whole life in a small zoo, next to a Coatimundi and a Porcupine. She had never even seen another cat, much less a Serval and we were concerned that she might not be able to adapt, but she produced her first litter of kittens, just a few months after her arrival.

Esmerelda - a female Serval born 1992 came to us in April of 1995 with her mate, Medicine Man. They were the sweetest Servals that we have seen who were not raised here. She has been in excellent health and often visits with her mate to raise his spirits. She keeps bringing him toys in an attempt to get him to play, but he has run off several times, so we don't leave them together.

Daisy - a female Serval born in 1990 moved to Easy Street on 6/30/94 at the highest price we've every paid for a Serval, because of her reputation as a good mother. Six months later she graced us with a litter of our white footed kittens. She allowed Don to handle the kits daily, just like Windsong had done. This provides the kittens with superior mothering, and yet gets them accustomed to people and being handled. Daisy has all of her claws, but never uses them against people of the other cats.

Personality - a female Serval with White Footed Sire born here on 1/1/95. She came by here name honestly, as she would crawl from the den at the sound of Don's voice to greet him. She is curious and rowdy, but quickly warms up to humans.

Mongo - a male Serval born in 1991 arrived in May 1996 from a reputable breeding facility in Oklahoma,

Lucky - a female Serval born 4/93 arrived at Easy Street on 6/6/93 from an auction in Okeechobee, Florida. She was raised in our home but has always been hissy. She had her first litter (by Nairobi) on 5/22/96.

Cheyenne - a female Serval born 1/23/90 and arrived to live with us as a zoo retiree.
