I really didn't get into hair metal back in the '80s and early '90s and it wasn't until recently that I "discovered" all those great bands like Dokken, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Skid Row, White Lion and Cinderella. I'm especially glad that I found Cinderella's greatest hits compilation, Once Upon A.... It is an excellent album and Cinderella is a good, solid band. Take the bluesy swagger of Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones, add the fat distorted guitar of AC/DC and the sleaze metal sound of Motley Crue, throw 'em into a bag, shake it up and you get bluesy hair metal band Cinderella. It's a recipe that works. |
1. "Shake Me" - This
song is very AC/DC-ish in style, nothing complicated on the guitar here, just a good, hard
rocking song. 2. "Nobody's Fool" - A slow paced ballad, "Nobody's Fool" really shows Cinderella's range as musicians. This is a great song, it reminds me of Def Leppard's "Bringin' On the Hearttbreak" for some reason. 3. "Somebody Save Me" - Another good song (this is Cinderella's "best of", after all), a good rocker. The guitar, again, sounds similar to AC/DC. 4. "Gypsy Road" - Ahhh, a classic! This is a swaggering rocker, sounding maybe a bit like Aerosmith and Motley Crue at times. Great song, maybe Cinderella's best. 5. "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" - This is a beautiful ballad, say what you want about hair metal but most of those bands were quite talented and Cinderella was one of the best. Songs like this showed that Cinderella not only could rock with best of them but they could also construct a well-written ballad. 6. "The Last Mile" - I don't care much for this song, though the guitar sounds pretty nice. It's an mid tempo song that just doesn't do much for me. 7. "Coming Home" - I love this song! Cinderella at their best, an excellent ballad played with an acoustic guitar. This may be my favorite Cinderella tune and one of my favorites from any band. 8. "Shelter Me" - Another bluesy piece but a bit more mid tempo than "Gypsy Road". Cinderella is really showing their Aerosmith influence on this one and they do a great job. The lyrics are quite good and they even use a saxophone on this one. 9. "Heartbreak Station" - Like "Coming Home", this is an acoustic ballad. It's pretty good but I like "Coming Home" more. It's interesting to note that a string section accompanies Cinderella on this song. 10. "The More Things Change" - A fast paced Aerosmith-type song, it's a pretty good tune overall. 11. "Love's Got Me Doin' Time" - Another Aerosmith-influenced tune, this song is sassy and funky. 12. "Hot and Bothered" - The guitar on this up tempo bluesy song sounds really nice, though the vocals are a tad annoying. 13. "Through the Rain" - Here we go with another acoustic (partially acoustic, actually) ballad but Cinderella did a pretty good job on most of these and this is no exception. Good song and the ending piano melody is excellent. 14. "War Stories" - This is the bluesiest (is that a word?) song on the whole album, it's not a great song but it has style. 15. "Move Over" - A really good compilation album ends on a sour note, this is easily the worst song on the album. Can't say much about this one except it's bluesy and annoying as Hell. Oh, well, the rest of the album is very good. |
This is one of the better compilation albums
I've heard and, unlike most compilation albums, Once Upon A... is complete. Every song
that should be on it is included, nothing is missing. So, if you are a casual Cinderella
fan (like me), Once Upon A... is probably the only Cinderella album you will ever
need. . |
