How to be an Artist
ha ha... i think this is one of the neatest things i've ever posted. it started as a random email from Em... i added and sent on... others participated... it was just generally great. if you have anything to add to this, feel free and send.
Stay loose. Learn to watch snails. Plant impossible gardens. Invite someone dangerous to tea. Make little signs that say Yes! and post them all over your house. Make Friends With Freedom and Uncertainty. look forward to dreams. Cry during movies. Swing as high as you can, on a swingset, by moonlight. Cultivate moods. Refuse to "be responsible". Do it for love. Take lots of naps.
Give money away. Do it now. The money will follow. it will
Believe in magic. Laugh a lot. Celebrate every gorgeous moment. Take moonbaths. Have wild imaginings, transformative dreams and perfect calm. Draw on the walls. Read everyday. imagine yourself magic. Giggle with children. Listen to old people. Open up. Dive in. Be free. Bless yourself. Drive away fear. Play with everything. Entertain your inner child. You are innocent. Build a for with blankets. Get wet. Hug trees. Write love letters. <--Poser
Smile more often. Cut your hair. Bite random passers by. Wear leopard print underpants. Buy toesocks. SCREAM. Compose strange e-mail. Pick your nose in public. Pick up things you find in gutters. Growl your frustrations. Let people know how you feel. Sigh often and swoon as much as you can. Allow yourself to be introspective, but be aware of the outside world. Make up games. Sing. Play an instrument. Watch the news. Tape the news and fastforward through the commercials. Look in the mirror, point, and laugh at yourself. Keep a pet. Be a pet. Do some homework for once. Sleep and forget the homework. Talk hour long showers. Masturbate often, and get into Erotica. "Keep a journal, and for G-d's sake, make it juicy!" Fantasize. Visit public parks and libraries. Hum while in public restrooms. Leave cryptic notes on tables in fast food restaurants. Look yourself in the eyes and say "I'm beautiful." Mean it. <-- Raphy
Stay awake to watch the sunrise. Remember sunsets. Talk to animals. Talk to plants. Talk to yourself - and make sure you listen. Go for long walks with no real destination. Let yourself fall in love. Attempt the impossible. Crunch through leaves in autumn. Run through the sprinklers. Don't take anyone too seriously. Don't take yourself too seriously. Pretend. Learn something new. Dream while awake. Climb trees - you'll be amazed at how few people look up and see you. Look up. Make animals out of clouds. Make faces out of ceiling spots. Jump in puddles. Face your fears. Laugh out loud in public at a private joke. Heckle movies. Learn to listen to others. Sit in dark coffee shops and pretend to be profound. Terrorize Wal Mart. Seep naked. Visit another country and try to fit in. Learn to love your body. Purr. Growl. Wear glitter. Question everything. Cross dress - you can learn a lot from a trans-gender. Test your limits. Have faith in something, especially yourself. Try not to worry too much about goals. Live life for the journey. Hug anyone you can. Play with fire. Believe in unicorns. <-- Jo-Jo
Believe in angels; speak to them; listen for their answers in the silence. Emulate spontaneity. Weep. Hug yourself. Hold yourself. Caress yourself. Masturbate without regret. Regret not masturbating when you had the chance. Contemplate life, poetize, dramatize, regenerate, recreate, relive, philosophize, even when naked and alone. Wail. Pounce. Shudder. Never learn to dance, but dance; in your room, in the shower as you sing songs you don't know the lyrics to, in the street, between classes, at the sound of every beat, in the rain, with the moonlight, in your head, anywhere and everywhere --but dance! Rebel against brushing your hair, changing your dirty jeans, polishing your boots; revolutionize, reinvent! Write: poetry that means nothing to everyone but you, short autobiographical fantasies, a hundred thousand letters you don't mean to send, journal entries you secretly want others to find. Be free, grow wings, take flight! Love love, love loving, love all who love you. Enjoy youth, even when old. Adore danger for what it reveals of life. Make a movie, start a religion, write music, sculpt, draw, paint, captivate and amuse, speak!! Strip; don't fear walking around barefoot. Reply and contribute to emails entitled "How to be an artist/Ways to live your life." Know beauty when it bites. <-- Louis
Treat your inner child to ice cream. Keep old love letters. Make faces
when no one is looking. Make sure the people you hate always see a smile on
your face. Trust everyone, but still lock your doors. Give your heart away.
Only say good things, mutter the bad things quietly under your breath. Never
say "when I was your age". Pick fruit and eat it immediately. Let someone
use thier nails on you. Follow your heart, but still keep an ear open for
your mind. Make a leap of faith. Pierce something. Growl during good sex.
Figure out what makes the people you love happy, and do it. Keep pictures,
for memories fade. Wear something that makes you feel sexy. Have adventures.
Go holistic driving. Make people wonder about you. Take care of your teeth
and knees. Sleep in. Cuddle. <-- Dave
Love. And love ruthlessly. Don't sing, scream. especially when you know the words. Say it, and say it wrong. Then work on making it right. Wear pink, and wear it proudly. Never, ever as long as you last, fear yourself. Don't take seditives, or drugs. especially if it's to make you better. Don't fear death, but revel in the fact that you win. You win everyday. Winning is good, and losing is just fine. Don't fear loss. Fear change even less. Call someone daddy. Be coy. Be sexy. Be fearless and ruthless. Sit in quiet rooms with candles. Dream. Let dreams be on the forefront, but have a back up plan. Put your eggs all in one basket, but be ready with tissues in case they break. Watch a movie and truly cry. Cry till you sniffle and your eyes hurt. Pierce something once. Do everything you can once. Travel. With your mind or body. Sleep with someone, but don't have sex. Touch as much as you can. With your hands, body, mind, lips. Taste. Smell. Let every sense be tittilated. Brush your hair. Everyday. Don't straighten curls. Use clips to put your hair back, but always let some fall. Perfection is far too scary a word for use. Sit in grass. have grass fights. Say one nice thing about another person. Compliment someone, and mean it. Give money to someone when they need it. Do it when they don't. Drink coffee with someone, or share a cigarette. Be honest. Scratch yourself. Do one bodily function well and loudly, and don't be embarassed by it. Dance while cooking. Sing with a spatula. Love food. Love food and love eating it. Make everything a delicious moment. Don't regret not making something passionate enough. But do live passionately. Write poetry, but don't be a poet. We're just dreamers with our heads in the clouds. Work, and work hard. Don't do anything half way. Hug, and love hugging. Remember your hugs, and write down the good things, especially quotes. Smile, and laugh. And laugh out loud, and make people wonder. Never let anyone know everything. But above all else, be. Hope. Dream. Love. Do the essentials, and do the little things, and love them both as if they were always needed. Love yourself. Love small children. Be a child. Be. <--Emily
