Artist Statement
My signature as a rakuist is my historical figures. I like the drama of raku having to handle hot work and not always knowing the results. The dry surfaces of raku yield such unpredictable colors in depth. Depth in matte is somewhat contradictory, but I like it.
As a practicing project architect, my professional background gave me a natural curiosity regarding the strength of various materials; a curiosity that is tested by the raku firing process.

The rapid firing process brings the temperature to 1800 degrees and quick cooling in water provides a challenge to both the artist and clay,Testing theories that involve science and math, as well as art.
Ceramic artists acknowledge their roots in ancient history while they strive for new interpretations, creating art that speaks of our time and place. A love for history encourages the design of my work, and ties my vocation to my avocation.
