Field 130: Domain I: Competency 003
The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction and assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.
The lessons that were covered in this class that pertained to lesson plans and the field experiences requiring students to develop their own plans were an immense help, particularly Lesson Plan 3. When I first entered in this class I was pretty much resigned to the fact that my lesson plan would be to present the material straight out of the book, but I learned that it has to do with planning sections and units, scheduling homework and tests as well as preparing students for the TAKS test. The lesson plans I developed and the feed back I received from my peers helped me become more comfortable and efficient at getting ready to teach.
Field 130: Domain II: Competency 006
The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning environment and for managing student behavior.
This course certainly helped me become more familiar with the expectations of teachers to manage their students effectively and create a healthy learning environment. One of the most interesting things to find out that teachers are help legally responsible for students’ behavior if they ignore certain situations. Field Experience 10 was particularly helpful with this specific competency because I was able to talk to some actual teachers about their classroom management techniques.
Field 130: Domain III: Competency 009
The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students.
The requirement to have a web page was demanding, but worthwhile. I became more familiar with Microsoft FrontPage and published a nice looking site. Having our course grades listed online opened my eyes to the enormous resource the Internet can be regarding children’s achievement. We can use sites on the Internet to help students and their parents chart their progress.
Field 130: Domain III: Competency 010
The teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with timely, high-quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.
This book helped me realize that a student can be very intelligent and make bad grades. Some students do better on multiple choice tests while others excel at essay questions. I learned to round out the selections and choices in my chapter 8 reader response. I also learned that the quicker you give students back their tests and help them in the areas that they’re having trouble in, the faster they’ll correct their mistakes.
Field 130: Domain IV: Competency 011
The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children's education and knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.
The last portions of the book really stressed that parental or family involvement. Family can be either the source or the cure for a lot of students’ problems, but we as teachers have to make an effort to find out what is going on. In my Field Experience 10 report, I spoke with Ms. Thompson, a high school English teacher, and she told me the story about how getting in touch with a student’s parents helped them turn their behavior and achievement around.
