  • Euroscreen SA

Euroscreen is a drug discovery company focused on "deorphanizing" and identifying new drugs interacting with G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs).
These are the challenging processes which involve the identification of the new ligands for orphan GPCRs and understanding their physiological function and potential implication in pathological processes.
Another branch of our activities is represented by the the development of drug screening tools and technologies based on the cloning and expression of recombinant receptors and other proteins involved in cell signaling.

The Company
Euroscreen was founded in 1994 as a spin-off of the Brussels University. The scientific founders of the company (Prof. Marc Parmentier and Prof. Gilbert Vassart) are leading experts in the field of GPCRs who pioneered the field of orphan receptor research in the late 80's by first using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reaction in homology cloning of receptors. Euroscreen is located in the University campus and covers 10,000 square feet of fully equipped laboratories and offices. The company currently has 80 employees, with 50 directly engaged in R&D. Since start-up, the company has raised 7.1 million € of equity and has received over 1 million € in research grants from European Community and local government.

Orphan receptor research
Over the last few years, Euroscreen has developed a broad technology platform and original strategies to functionalise orphan receptors. Since its creation, the company has developed and patented a powerful functional screening technology in HTS format, based on the expression of apoaequorin (AequoScreen™). Euroscreen has the worldwide exclusive license on the use of the apoaequorin gene in cell-based assays. Use of promiscuous G proteins or other means to drive the coupling of receptors towards the calcium-signalling pathway makes AequoScreen™ a unique tool for the search of natural or surrogate ligands of orphan receptors. A proprietary bicistronic expression vector is another powerful tool developed by the company for adequate expression of orphan GPCRs at the surface of the cell. Together with its academic partner, Euroscreen forms a group of over 100 scientists and technicians focused on GPCR research, probably the largest group in Europe in this field. Euroscreen has built a multidisciplinary team with expertise in cellular and molecular biology, bioinformatics, morphology, natural extracts purification, monoclonal antibodies, screening technologies and development of transgenic models. The company also benefits from a large network of outstanding academic collaborations.

Screening tools and technologies
Euroscreen offers a broad range of products and services adapted to the specific needs of its customers in the drug research community. These include a large collection of recombinant GPCRs available as stable mammalian cell lines or as membrane preparations ready to use in functional and binding assays, currently used in screening campaigns within pharmaceutical companies. Euroscreen also licenses its AequoScreen™ technology for known receptors and is developing a growing collection of stable cell lines co-expressing GPCRs and apoaequorin. Custom cloning and expression of new receptors, development of cell-based HTS assays as well as in house screening are also part of Euroscreen's services.
