The Oasis

Eyes open, i'm dreaming;
My mind leads my heart
On a walk down memory lane
Towards the safe nostalgia of yesterday.

But,
Obscured images of an uncertain future
Abduct my childhood fantasies
And lead them astray
Through the shadows of a haunted forest,
Abandoning them
To the evil designs of hope-destroying spirits.

I frantically search the darkness
To find once again the comfort
of my carefully-guarded memories,
But the past forever hides away
Behind the future's threatening vicinity.

I walk, terrified and confused,
Through visions of the time gone by,
Trying in vain to grasp the freedom of its sunfilled days.

The wind sings rhymes of long-remembered smiles,
Slowly destroying me
With thoughts of innocence, forever-lost.

Long ago, the stars held the key to all my schoolgirl wishes;
Tonight, they illuminate life's darkest truths,
Shedding light not on yesterday's fun and games,
But on tomorrow's doubts and fears.

No longer able to escape
In its carefully-constructed world of fantasies,
My mind lets itself be guided
Along the uneven road ahead.

Aware now more than ever
Of life's precious fragility,
My heart leaves the sheltering arms of the past
To seek happiness in its own embrace.

With eyes almost blinded by the rising sun,
I enter the dawn,
No longer dreaming in yesterday's shadows,
But living in tomorrow's light.
