The Ascension...

12th May 1997

It was quite early on Ascension morning... my coursemate and I took a bus to Komtar to meet another coursemate. When we reached Komtar, we called up the other coursemate and we agreed to meet at the Public Back on Burmah Road. Our mission... to eat the famous Transfer Road roti canai.

After waiting 10 minutes, my coursemate arrived by car and the two of us hopped in. We then headed to the stall. Long tables lined the roadside by a drain. It was 9 am and there were many people there although it was a holiday.

Yours truly ordered 2 pieces. They were of satisfactory size. The roti was still mildly crispy, hot and fresh. The taste was not the usual clear and sweet. With the gravy, it was a delicately complex, full-bodied taste. It was very spicy and onion-ish... a very umph-ish experience. It's the kind of roti canai that makes you think while enjoying it. Truly out of this world... a must try.

After the stimulating breakfast, we found ourselves in Midlands park a little too early. We lepak-ed, punctuated by intellectual discourses, while waiting for more shops to open.

We later caught the 1 pm show at Cathay... Double Team. Entertaining and rather interesting. This spelled the end of my first episode in town. I was back in my apartment after that... to rest.

I was in town again that night for Ascension mass at Immaculate Conception. A Thai priest co-celebrated mass with Fr. Sebastian. He was here with his friends to celebrate the silver jubilee of their ordination, I think. I had the humble chicken broth for dinner after which Michelle and Lena (of the Catholic Student Society of Universiti Malaya) bumped into me. A pleasant surprise.

Until I hear from you, take care and God bless.

Yours canai-ly,
Bart
