Sounds Simple...

28 May 1997

I'm back at the lab. It's Wednesday, 9.25 pm. My legs are a bit tired from walking... again. I was at the airport with a friend to kill time. Personally, I think I'd better take the opportunity to see some places before work piles up. It's only at the beginning of the semester these chances come by...

Anyway, have you ever thought of the cause of the world's problems like war, crime, famine, etc.? I think the cause is progress. The reason is pretty simple: With so much progress, people compete to be at the top. They fight. Naturally some win and some lose. Those who lose out find other means to survive. Some resort to crime. In certain cases famine might occur.

I feel the solution to this problem is to 'limit' progress and live a simple and contented lifestyle. Picture this: Everyone lives in a semi-developed state with 'decent' infrastructure and transport. Everyone or family has some land to plant kangkung and rare some chickens. There's no real need for modern agricultural technology. Everyone has enough to eat, has decent clothes and a place to call home. The share what they have with others. There's love. No trading is involved. No war. No crime. No famine. Nobody really ever bothers to fight because everyone is contented.

I know this sounds unrealistic but I'm quite sure that in some not-so-developed parts of the world, there are communities living such simplistic lifestyles. However, we're always talking about progress.

Are we better off than them?

Simply yours,
Bart
