Why Oasis Are More Hip-Hop Than Britpop
What do the hip-hop nation and the self-proclaimed biggest
rock band in the world have in common? If you said platinum records, N.W.A.
samples, and a penchant for superflous helicopters, you'd be right. But
those are just a few of the similarities between the two. Check it:
- Old-School Fashion: With their Kangol windbreakers, Fred Perry
shirts that recall early 80's Izods, and two-piece Adidas track suits, the
Gallagher boys could pass for "Beat Street" extras. (Accompanied with
picture of Liam in said wardrobe.)
- Pro-Sports Team Obsession: Oasis devote themselves to the
Manchester City Football Club with a passion that matches, if not
surpasses, any love Ice Cube ever felt for the LA Raiders. And, like Puffy Combs,
they've got the logoed gear to prove it. (Accompanied with picture of
Liam & Noel in City jerseys.)
- Video Vision: The video for Oasis' single, "D'you Know
What I Mean?" (basically, a laddish translation of the hip-hop colloquialism,
"Y'know what am sayin'?") features a swarm of helicopters, just like
nearly every Hype Williams production (see Mary J. Blige's "Everything").
(Accompianed with still from the video.)
- Posses/Rivalries: Oasis have taken to rolling with an
entourage (including Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, and several burly guitar
techs/bodyguards) that would impress Suge Knight. This provides menacing
back up for the band's very public fueds with fellow Britpoppers Blur, and
more recently, the shoe-gazing outfit Hurricane #1. (Accompanied with photo of
Liam butting up against Damon at the football match.)
- Suspect Boasts: In his book, "The Science of
Rap", KRS-One instructed would-be rappers to "speak highly of yourself." The
Gallagher brothers understand: When asked if he thought Oasis were more important
to the youth of today than God, Noel responded, "Without a shadow of a doubt
that's true." (Accompanied with picture of Noel holding out money.)
- Drugs/Scrapes with the Law: When it comes to outspoken
public support of illegal narcotics, Oasis are the Cypress Hill of the
U.K. Noel recently told the British press he thinks that the British Parliment
is a "bunch of hypocrites" for keeping marijuana illegal. Liam, always more
direct, was arrested for possesion of cocaine twice. (Accompanied with
picture of Liam and Patsy at a bar, with many a-lager can present.)
