How it all came about.

Maun; the tourist capital of Botswana lies in the north-western part of the country and is the gateway to the world renowned Okavango Delta (refer map at right).

Three years ago Mr Ian Tucker from the accounting firm Ian Tucker and Co. saw that the time was appropriate to establish a Table in Maun. At the time he could not do anything positive as he only operated a part time office in the town. Stefan Grobler; an attorney from Gaborone moved to Maun during May 1997 to open an office for Chris du Plessis. Stefan was a pipeliner with Gaborone 64. He met Braam Viljoen who managed the now full time office for Ian Tucker. Braam was an active Tabler from Schweizer-Reneke 247 (ARTSA). They soon realised that they have a common goal and that they should do something about the situation.

During early December 1997 Murray Osborne-Edwards (the then Area Chairman) and Theo Schoeman visited Maun on their way to Shakawe on the Okavango Panhandle. They had an informal discussion with Stefan and Braam regarding the issue of chartering a new Table. Braam earlier met Greg Soutter; a former Tabler from Selebi-Phikwe 52. Greg showed interest in establishing a Table in Maun. Braam also spoke to Dries Krause; a 41'er and former Tabler from Mafikeng and Bloemfontein. He was keen to help the guys to get a Table going.

At the same time, the idea of Selebi Phikwe 52 extending to Maun had been discussed as official table business during early 1997. It was however felt at the time that; although there was an ex-Phikwe tabler in Maun (Greg Soutter), the intevening distance of some 670km would make it difficult for the table to meet the commitment associated with a table extension. This situation changed during early 1998 when Theo Schoeman (ex-Gaborone 64) was appointed honorary member of Selebi Phikwe 52. Theo had ongoing business commitments in Maun and became keen to play a vital role in the extension.
A motion to extend and form a Round Table in Maun was tabled at Selebi Phikwe 52 business meeting #267 in February 1998. The motion was unanimously passed and Theo Schoeman appointed as extension officer.
The inaugural meeting of the proposed table was held during April 1998 where Maun Round Table was given the number 65 by ARTCA. Braam Viljoen was elected proposed chairman, Stefan Grobler was elected as secretary and a former tabler from Jwaneng 62 was elected treasurer. Due to a heavy work-load Greg Soutter declined to be elected as councelor. Through the efforts of Theo Schoeman and the new tablers in Maun, the constitutional requirements for the charter of a new Table have now been completed.
