This is a pic of Angela: She was about 15 at this time; She was running for Salmon queen. The dress that she is wearing takes about a year to make. It is made of sea shells and deer hide. The work on the bottom part consists of pine nuts and shells.

This is a photo of my grandma, mother & uncle. This pic was taken in the early 50's. They are getting ready for a brush dance, which is held before the big hunt. A brush dance is a gathering of the tribe to become one with the spirits of the earth. |

As I have said I am from the Yurok tribe in Northern Calif. Yurok means Downriver People. We are a peaceful tribe that had no problems with other tribes. Fishing and hunting is the source of activity for our people. We had no chiefs for our tribes but we do have shamans. The elders of our people was the ones who made the decisions on where to camp and fish. We used the things of the earth for almost everything from food to clothing.. Our eating habits consistied of river eels, acorns, fowl and deer and seaweed, when dried it was like our version of popcorn now. May sound strange to you but it was very tasty to us. :-))
