It's soapbox time. If you already know and love the Backstreet Boys, click here.

"They're a no-talent boy band. They don't write their own music and they can't play their own instruments. The group was molded together... I have no respect for them." - U2 fan on *Nsync.

This statement about *Nsync may be true, so it makes me very angry when people say that *NSync and Backstreet Boys are one and the same. Have no respect for the Backstreet Boys? Then please allow me to teach you a lesson.

The "Boy Band" Tag

Nobody was paid to put the Backstreet Boys together. In fact, they came together on their own. I will spare you the details, because if you do not respect them, you obviously don't care. However, I wanted to point out that they are not like other groups. On the contrary, Backstreet Boys never considered themselves a band. That nixes the "boy band" tag. (If you insist on still calling them that, you might want to check out the very first "boy band"....)

The Beatles

"They can't play their own instruments."

I think that speaks for itself. By the way, on their newest single, Drowning, that's Kevin playing the piano in the background.

As for why they don't play their instruments all the time, it's because they choose to dance instead. Live in concert, Backstreet Boys dance during some songs and then play their own instruments during others. In the performance to Answer to Our Life, all of the Boys play instruments.

"No talent"...

No-talent? If you actually think Backstreet Boys have no talent, you must not have heard any of their music before. Not only is their music loved by millions, this group performs better live than recorded. How many acts can honestly boast that?

I have heard them in concert plenty of times to rule out any doubt of their talents. And the first time I heard them live singing Shape of My Heart acapella, I was blown away and vowed to never let another person's personal opinions cloud my judgment of Backstreet Boys again. The bottom line is... these guys can sing and no one can ever disprove it.

"They don't write their own music."

Well this one can be dispelled if people would even bother to look in the inserted booklets that come with the CD. In the credits to the songs you will find who writes the songs. No, the Backstreet Boys have not written ALL of their songs, but they have written or partially written many of them. Want examples? Larger Than Life, The One, The Perfect Fan, Answer to Our Life, Shining Star, and How Did I Fall in Love with You are just a few examples. All five Boys sat down together and wrote the song Time, which they performed at the Concert for New York for the workers of the September 11th disaster. The Backstreet Boys were the youngest male performers there, in the midst of other acts including Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bon Jovi, and others. This is not the first time BSB has performed with musical legends, which shows their respect by the Great musicians.

Now, the truth-
They are regular, nice people

Whatever the media has ever said, the truth is known to the people closest to them. The fact is, the Backstreet Boys are five normal guys. They make mistakes like we all do, and they also have crazy lives because of their occupation and general appeal. They are also very down-to-earth, decent people. They are kind to their fans and are involved in a lot of charity work, including Howie's Dorough Lupus Foundation, Brian's Healthy Heart Club for Kids and Kevin's environmental group, Just Within Reach. In January of 2002, both Howie and Kevin were nominated as Olympic torch-bearers for their charity work.

So to conclude...

If you don't happen to like the music of the Backstreet Boys, that's fine. But that doesn't mean they deserve disrespect. Respect them for who they are, what they do, and for the sake of the people who love them.

Thank you. I will now step off the soap box.
